McAfee McAfee total protection Scam for more
24th of Jan, 2011 by
I feel very ripped off by McAfee.

Had three computers "protected" by them for a while. My son broke the screen on his laptop so we did not update his until we got a new screen. It sat for a while before we got one. While protected our desktop got a virus that the neighbor boy downloaded from a WOW fake site. We got rid of the virus according to mcafee & stinger, microsoft tool, etc. For whatever reason, no one could find a virus on the computer but it was still not right. A factory reboot was done. When we reinstalled the software for mcafee it said we were over our license use and had to pay for a 4th license for the same computer just had been factory restored. Well I got on live chat with them and they said i should buy the 3 user protection because it was getting ready to expire soon anyway and they would fix the 4th computer license error.

Anyway, we did- EARLY- we had to pay for the 3 user protection which was around $75 for the repaired laptop, the sony laptop and our desktop. We got a new laptop for my birthday thus another "license" fee another $18.

No one told us you could deactivate a subscription and then use it on a different computer. It was a trick to get extra money. Next thing I know my sons mcafee subscription is not right. Well I go online and his was "accidently" deactivated when they "fixed" the license issue. needless to say this caused a terrible mess. We had to go through and uninstall reinstall on his laptop and it was fine, but it said over the license limit again! So I get on chat and the tech then deactivates the sony subscription! So then the sony McAfee software gives errors and I thought it would be like my son's computer just uninstall/reinstall. well.... not so easy

I was having trouble getting it to remove so i got on chat. A tech took control of my computer and ran things I have no clue on. Installed things and then said he'd email me instructions for removal. he then put a dsfix file in my documents file and ran it then logged out. I got the email but it still would not uninstall properly because the screen turned white for the mcafee window. So I could not uninstall it. I tried reactivating it and it would not work. I finally got it to go away after 3 days of trying and using their removal tool. I installed their software again and for whatever reason they put a temp version on a computer at first download then when you pay it upgrades to better. the temp version went on fine, but then it would not update and when it finally did- it went to the white screen again and would not load. Meanwhile my sony is running super slow and not loading at start up right. I have no idea what he did but it was not like that before he took control. I then get back on with live chat very upset because it says I have no protection when i did. that guy does even more stuff and next thing I know I'm rebooted again with an even slower computer and no tech!

I contacted them again from another computer and no one listens, they keep asking you the same questions over & over. It is very frustrating. I logged into my account and i had to pay for yet another license! Every time you download it wants to charge you another fee even if for the same computer! Some how I ended up with 5 paid licenses for 4 computers and a messed up Sony.

They said they would refund the license fee but it would take 5 days. I demanded help for repair of the Sony and they just kept saying someone would call me who has more experience. No call has come yet. Meanwhile, I am at risk to get a virus, they have $116.95 of my money, I still got a virus even using them on our old computer, and my Sony is messed up! I had to order factory disks for another $45 (with shipping) and I have nothing but trouble! they scammed me for additonal licenses and almost feel for it. They are not as safe as they claim and the techs do not listen to you. They broke my computer or at least damaged it and it was fine prior to them remotely controlling it.

It was almost ok had they not messed up my sony on top of it. But the whole scam of trying to get you to pay for more licenses is unreal. Only after I asked for a refund was I told we could have deactivated one at any time and used it on another computer.
