My daughter has been attending Carrington College since march 2011. She has an Associates degree in science from a reputable community college (Riverside Community College) before she became a student at Carrington, (Apollo, Western Career College & subsidiary Devry College). When she wanted to enroll at Carrington to fulfil her dream of eventually becoming a veterinarian, I was asked to come with her to their financial aid office per request of the school. I was not happy that she would be required to take out a student loan for the Vet tech program in the amount of approximately $30,000. Neither was I impressed with the fact that if you failed any portion of the educational curriculum you would be required to restart the program from the beginning of that semester even if you were doing well in the rest of the program. I told her I had reservations about a school that was so invested in the financial aspect. She, however, wanted so badly to enter her career of choice and was unable to find a program that she could go straight through without a waiting list. So, she enrolled. When she started there was a class of forty. Now their are only , perhaps, fifteen with some of them struggling. When her grades began to drop ( they have stacks of material to learn weekly) she went to them for help. They also changed the way they were testing (multiple choice became fill in the blank and it could come from any of the exorbitant amounts of work given. She complained about it. They told her to read her book. She passed her clinical but, found herself in trouble with the class work. They told her she could go to the DEVRY section of the school for a tutor. Devry doesn't have a vet tech program! So now, her grades are down with no help in sight. Not even a lifeline thrown to hear. Finals are here and they are still given quizzes. A week before they gave a presentation that required an outline. In the middle of taking finals she is called to the office and told she is being kicked out for plagiarism. She is devastated. She gave them the website that she used when she turned in the outline. While she was waiting another student said they told her that she had plagiarized as well. But, get this, she didn't get kicked out. She may not have gotten the grades she needed but, it hurts her that they have labeled her as a cheat. Then they told her she could re-start the class if she wished! I hate to use the race card because I feel we just have to deal with the real world. When came to me saying she thought her teacher disliked her, I encouraged her to forget it and just deal with it because she will just have to learn to navigate it. She was the only African American in her class. I am so disappointed in the way that Carrington handled this situation and is not there for their students. With the amount of money they are getting they should have done better. I don't think I will leave this situation as it is because there are so many people that had high hopes that were dashed by an uncaring institution! Another $10,000 |
