Going away to college is an exciting adventure. A new chapter. It is also a very stressful time, not only for the student who will usually be living on their own for the first time in their young lives, but for the parent who must let their child go on their own. Parents as well as these new college students spend much time searching for the right school, the right credentials and most important researching for that place where they know these young adults will be able to learn and live in a safe environment. Parents and students take the time to travel, take tours, read brochures and ask questions to ensure that when their children leave home they will find a place that is safe. Once the college is selected, then off they go trying to find this perfect place to stay. Their first home away from home where they can feel comfortable, safe, happy. A place where they do not have to worry about their daily safety. When the parents choose an apt, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is their child's safety. Unfortunately, it is not always this simple. Sadly, these so called housing for students are often painted and portrayed as these glorious buildings designed for today's students. Modern structures where your son or daughter will have a home away from home. When you take the tours, ask the questions and enter into contract with them, they portray these apartments as a home away from home. A safe heaven where your child can learn and live without worries. You make your selection and then, the lease is signed, they take your money and assure you that your children will be safe and in good hands. That these apartments have security patrolling the area and your child's safety is their number one concern. They are sure to let you know that you have made the right decision. Well, think again because this is not always true. If you really believe that, then as a parent, I will tell you that you might find yourself in a bad situation. As a matter of fact, once you enter into a lease, the last thing they care about is your child, their safety or any other concerns you might have that might affect them losing money. By going to the website, they try to sell you on the "picture perfect location for your child. They are described at "the modern upscale apts"..."a place where in big letters they tell you what their mission statement is.. "To do right - by our residents...". Interesting enough though, when one of these residents has had problems with safety threats...and when one of these residents has had to call the police on several occasions and when one of these residents lets main office know..hey, there is a problem..., then you find out that what they said and what they are willing to do are very different. When you feel your life has been threatened and you call the courtesy officer and the officer assigned does not show up..you then have to call the Greensboro PD who has had to come in and handle the situation. Not once, not twice but over 4 times. When other students then harass you because you dared to call the PD, when this harassment continues and nothing is done then you take the next step and call home office. Well, their answer is "the security police is there as a courtesy, they are not required to respond to your calls"...really? So when you "sell me your business, and tell me my child will be safe..then, was that a lie? Home office's response is that even if the student feels a threat..even if the student's property has been broken into, destroyed, their lives threatened, what they can do is move your child to another place..the tell you that the safety of the student "WAS NEVER GUARANTEED". Do you really wish to have your child placed in that situation? By letting them move into Sterling Cottage at West End, that is exactly what you will get. These people are interested in the money they will lose if you wish to get out of that environment. Their idea of "doing right by residents" should have a few extra words attached.."as long as we do not lose any money in the process". I know your child's safety and well being is important. I implore you to think about it twice before you send your children to stay at Sterling Cottage at West End. Call home office and ask them "if my child has a problem where they feel their life is at risk..and if they wish to leave because they are harassed in one way or another, and if several calls have been made to the police to make them aware of this ongoing situation, will you help? What will you do? Do you have a problem if we request our lease to be terminated? Go ahead, call them. Ask them..and then, make a decision. To do right by your residents means "to protect them, to ensure that rules are followed, that people are not harassed or bullied". I would love to hear what they have to say. As for me, I will make sure that every parent that is trying to find a good place for their children knows what Sterling Cottage at West End is all about and hope they stay as far away from Sterling Cottage at West End as possible. |
