Sport and Health Club How many others out there have been ripped off by Sport and Health Clubs? alexandria, Virginia |

I joined with my friend and billed to credit card. LIke the other guy who wrote the complaint, above we were overbilled for our membership. And this is not the first time they have done this to me. In the several years I've been a member, on and off, each time I was over charged at the end of the agreement and simply paid it. This time I'm not. I've hired a lawyer. Have you been ripped off by them? Write back because we need to come together on this. We joined in January 2010. We billed monthly to credit card. In July we paid the rest of the one year committment in full - also on the credit card. At that time we gave notice we would not be continuing the membership. I moved out of the area. My friend joined on her own with her boyfriend and paid for that membership. In early March I got a call from the "Billing Dept" telling me I was 60 days late on my payment for my membership. I disputed this. She claims I never cancelled. She has "record" that my friend cancelled, and rejoined, but not me. Said I owed 2 months dues. When I aksed why they hadn't sent me a bill in January (when the payment was late) or called, she said they did, but it "was returned as insufficient address". Hummm that's odd, since my address hasn't changed in several years. I told her I resigned my membership in July and paid it in full. She said she had "no proof" of that and that I never cancelled. I asked her for "Proof" that she had mailed me a bill showing the amount due and/or a late notice. She declined and kept changing the subject. She's a broken record and very trained to repeat the same phrases over and over again hoping the caller will give up. I asked why nothing in February notifyin me I was late. Again she claimed it was sent but returned. I then asked her why she didn't call. After all if she's calling now and clearly has my phone number, why didn't she call then. She told me she only calls after 60 or 90 days (I forget which). She had my email and emailed me. If she had my email, why not email me back in January when I was late? This "overdue" bill was 60 days old and now approaching being 90 days over due. So 3 months of dues (for a club I hadn't used since the previous summer) plus her late fees. This conversation went on and on over a 30 day period with various emails going back and forth. I had started copying the "Manager" but she never even responded to any of the emails. The "billing lady" told me it wouldln't matter if I copied her, that she would not answer me and that she would just defer it to "me" she said. I find it interesting that if you to to their main web page, you cannot get a corporate address of any kind, a corporate phone number, or any contact names for the corporate office. I've asked her for the name of their legal counsel and she hasn't responded. The manager has never answered. They turned me over to a collection agency for the small amount due, which has now damaged my credit. On a matter or principal I refused to pay the money I don't owe. IN the past they have done this to me at least 2 other times, and I paid the bill. This time I've decided to hire an attorney instead. I know that there are more people who have been ripped off by Sport and Health Clubs billing practices. Furthermore and what's worse is that there were many days that important features of the club were not even available. For weeks the jacuzzi did not work nor the steam room. The showers were filthy and I complained. The exercise/classrooms were closed due to construction and many of the classes that I had joined for, were "cut" because of the rennovation work. Over the past 10 years this club goes through constant renovation whereby many of the features are unusable, but the club does not give us a credit for this inconvenience or the lack of ability to use features of the club that I pay for. The steam room and jacuzzi happened to be important to me. They were broken most of the 6 months I used the club. Can we ask them to supply us members with how many days in 2010 features of the club were not available? Oh yes, and I paid them about $2300 in personal training, so they did get that money from me as well. You would think they would value my expenditures and cancel the membership for $160.00 or so they claim I owe them. Previously as a member I also spent about $2400 in personal training. Anyway, they are a scam totally. Join the club, things dont work. The locker rooms are dirty, the steam room is mildewy, the jacuzzi doesn't work 90% of the time and the good classes aren't offered at normal times. If this is your only choice then join, but know that you are going to have issues and pay monthly, don't give them a credit card, and send a cancellation by registered, certified mail. |
