Scam
12th of May, 2011 by kspilker525
I responded to an ad on Craigslist and received the response below. I was told to get my free credit report, then set up an appointment to look at the house.

The link sent me to a site affiliated with freecreditnation.com, which also shows up on this and other Scam sites. Now when I click on ownerassistedrentals.com it won't load and there is something about "Fraud protection." I believe that both of these websites are scams. If you need a credit report, start at FTC.gov and find the link to annualcreditreport.com, which is the real place to get your free annual credit report.

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to email me about the place.
We thought we had the place rented last week to a young couple, but communication has dropped off. You are the first person to email about it since we put it back on the market . It would only be fair that we gave you the first shot at the property. Normally, we would prefer a year lease, but would also be open to shorter terms if necessary. I'm sure that you will want to see the property before making a final decision. I will accept pets but no more than 2. I would simply give you the address and let you swing by, but my husband is against blindly advertising an empty home online. Rest assured the home has been up kept properly and had a good cleaning and fresh coat of paint. Basic utilities are currently on, but we expect that you would get them put into your name fairly quick. If you want to go ahead and schedule a time to see the property, go to the link below and print off the free copy of your report. Your score isn't necessarily important, we're just interested in seeing that there are no evictions / landlord related judgments.

Go here to get the report: http://ownerassistedrentals.com/?Prop=V25367

I am very open as far as appointments go to show the property. Any morning after 10am is fine. Just let me know when you have everything printed and be sure to leave me a contact number to reach you at and any desired time. I will call you to confirm a time and choose a place to meet. Thanks for looking,

Thanks and hopefully talk to you soon!

Jessica

Wow! Thanks so much. I smelled a scam too. Too good to be true on a property in Santa Clarita, CA. Thanks for the tips on the real report.

Got this for a place in Snoqualmie, WA. Glad I did some research!

I believed this too, but only got as far putting in my name, address, and phone. When I clicked "continue" the page just refreshed and cleared my info. I did not put in my SS number or any financial info. Can "they" do anything with just my name, address, and phone?

I fell for this too but I only filled out my name, address, and phone number at the ownerassistedrentals.com site. When I clicked "continue" it just refreshed and cleared the page. I did not put in my SS number or any financial information. How much damage can be done with a name, address, and phone number? I don't know what information identity thieves need. Thanks for any help/reassurance...

Exact same email in Seattle, WA

Got the exact same email myself for a DC metro area posting. It's good to be skeptical these days. (I was already suspicious because the price was too good and there wasn't the same level of detail in the post as in most other rental postings. Renter beware, alas.

I also got this email, thought the posting was for a house in seattle, didnt reply to the credit report thing, I thought it to be to much work and if you wanted me to rent the place, i would like to look at it first before i give you all my info.

Gilroy, CA just got hit.

I am lucky that the link was disabled when i got on. - same thing " jessica"

I told my fiance and she works at a " security solution" company who's business is catching spammers and hackers.

She was very skeptical of this whole process, so she online.

She said if you feel its not legitmate go to: networksolution.com and do a "who is" domain look up.

If it is a legit company you will see all their information ( name, phone, email), etc.

and legit companys have domain names registered for much longer than 2 weeks!

Then go online and look for any reports against them.

First thing she noticed was the domain was just bought 5 days ago, and registered in BAHAMAS.

YOU MUST submit Jessica's email as spam on your email in box.. Your email providers will start storing data such as ; Jessicas email sending i.p address, domain name and content to start fighting this scam spam attack.

thanks for posting this

Gilroy CA was hit this week by this scammer.

Same thing. Craigs listing for rental.

Same general email from jessica.

My fiance told me this sounded bad.

She works for a network security company that people like cisco use to fight spam. So she knew this was fraudulant.

She went to network solutions because scammers just registered tons of domain names and go thru .

The best thing to keep in mind.

legitmate companies will have full contacts information on registration and they should be in the US. If its kept hidden, its a scammer.

Spam security providers need us to submit these thru the spam/junk button. They capture the emails footprint, content, message id, and start to score them immediately.

They will be blocked faster and they can even block their servers. It will never be 100% since they guys are wicked and get paid on people who fall for it.

Please submit these through your email provider spam button.

AND.. never go to where "someone"directs you in order to submit your credentials. Go to the internet and find the top 3 that are well known like esperian.

Any renter will accept one, they just have to be 30 days old.

Just got the same email in Minneapolis, MN. They are prolific!

$1125 / 3br - PEACE & QUIET! A place you would be proud to call home (Lakeville)

Thanks! Just got the same email in response to a house in Hawaii... glad I found your post first!

Just got this same email but they changed the link address to an org domain, I'm guessing to look more realistic. http://ownerassistedrentals.org/?Prop=P66565

Jessica also changed her last name too. I thought her email seemed a bit strange, so thankful to have this posting to confirm.

I received the email from "Jessica" about a 3 br in DC (it was posted on Craigslist as if it were a multiple-unit complex). I NEVER click on links sent to me especially when it's looking for my personal information! I'd never met with anyone in person or toured the place...why would I inmediately give my info to anyone under these circumstances? It's a terrible scam and I'm sorry for anyone who fell for it.

I wrote her back to thank her for wasting my time with a scam email. I let her know that her karma is screwed. And I pleasantly let her know to F-off. :) I also flagged the Craigslist post.

Wow, same post in St. Louis, MO (University City). Just go the above email, verbatim, except her name is Jessica Fuller. Glad I checked first. Thanks!

Sigh, I got this same exact email - from a [email protected]. Thought the ad was too good to be true - luckily I never used the link she provided. I never did get a response back, so my suspicion alert went on - kinda feel like a sucker for giving my phone number, though! Thanks for sharing.

Ugh...I should have known. If it sounds too good to be true, it ALWAYS is, isn't it?

WOW!! It's good to see that there are so many people that can smell a scam. I was just about to write to tell "Jessica" that I know where to find a truly free credit report and that I would meet her with all the information that she needed in hand and then wondered why her email directed me to the particular site and why she expected to find tenant history included in my credit report. The price, the opportunity and the details of the email were all too fishy. I was wondering who Jessica might really be, whether it was even a good idea to attempt to meet "her" or share my information. I, too, looked it up and found interesting details of the domain referred to, which led me here...whoa!! I've a response for her now!!!

OMG! I just sent this Jessica a reply to a craigslist ad on an apartment near UCLA! I did a search about this scam on this site but somehow did not land on this particular page until after I emailed her. Crap. Did not send any details only to tell her that I will be using my credit union's free credit report instead of the one she posted.

Haha... that's why I thought it was too good to be true, coz it was! And when I read that exact same email from an hour ago, I just had to do a search. too bad, I was not able to find this one first.

It's interesting that she uses the same EXACT email every single time.

Beware of [email protected]

Thanks to the original poster!
