I listed a Nikon coolpix camera on craigslist for 100 dollars and almost immediately got a response saying "Hi, I'm interested in your item. Please tell me if it is still availible and your firm price" I assumed that they were near me because who would look for something so little and common in Iowa when based in Utah. I then got this email. "Thanks dear,
I got your mail.The price is ok by me,I reside in Utah but needs to purchase for my Son that traveled to West Africa for his international studies,he is with his Father who was transferred to work at the united states embassy in west Africa and i want to send him a
birthday gift because his birthday is coming up soon..I would have come to pick it up myself but because of distance and nature of my work as a medical doctor at Mormon Tabernacle Choir extension in South Utah,my days are always busy.Please if you do have a
paypal account,provide it to me so that I Make the payment to you Or your Full name,Full contact Address,City,State and Zip Code if you wish to receive the money through money order.I will be paying you the total of $160 for both the cost price and the
shipping...[Please i need the information fast so that your payment will reach you before tomorrow to enable you ship the Packages fast. It stressed the fact that it was urgant that I send her my information immediatly so that I could send the camera to her son in africa. I sent her my Name and adress expecting a money order through the mail for me to cash before mailing my item. but then I got an email saying that she sent me the money by Merchant Express Money Order Company and to be expecting an email through them. Then sent me the adress to mail the camera and I noticed it was in Nigeria, where most scams happen. I can't count the number of times I've gotten an email from a Nigerian bank about my funds being transfered for pick up. (i have no funds!) I typed in Mercant Express money order and found this website about the same eamils and stories happening after putin a camera on Craigslist. I immediatly sent "DR. Brown" a message saying that the deal is off and that I looked up her money order company and found this same craigslist scam all over the place. Thank you ripoff report for saving me from sending my valuble goods to Nigeria for no money.

| I had the same thing happen to me lastnight! July 10, 2011 The messages were word for word the same. The price was different but still the same scam going on! If I hadnt found this I wouldn't have known not to continue with the deal. I thought it was strange that someone in UT was looking at my stuff in Texas and I did a little research. Again thank you for posting this! |

I got the same this last night. Sounded fishy to me. Only provided my email, I really hope I don't start receiving SPAM emails. Needless to say, if I receive payment through paypal (which I doubt), I think I will keep the product.

Yep,
posted a laptop on Craig's list, got similar email, i always post in ebay or Craig's I will not send anything to Africa. That usually keeps the scammers away. mostly |

| I have had many people try and purchase the items I have been trying to sell and the PayPal email that you receive stating you have pending funds is a scam. Somehow they have managed to make it look like a legit email from PayPal but if you click to vie the actual email address instead of just the display name it will show some off the wall email not ending in @paypal.com which is where I catch all these people trying to scam me. They make these email accounts and as the display name as we would have out full name they make it a PayPal email to make it look real. Be careful and don't ever mail anything out without receiving a payment first. My first time I actually mailed off the item and then realized it was a scam I called the FedEx office and they held my package until the next day and never sent it. |
