Make sure you read the fine print when signing up at L.A. Fitness. Even then that may not prevent you from losing money.
Even if the sales person tells you one thing, or offers you another deal, its what goes down on the contract which matters.
They may say oh that will be taken off. Or you won't have to pay that.
They will try to sale you an upgrade of your membership, make sure that you realize what will be taken out of your account each month.
