Went to Ed's because the catalytic converter on my truck had been stolen and I needed it fixed right away and his shop happened to be a few blocks from where it happened. Met the owner (Ed). We agreed that he would replace the stolen catalytic converter and replace the muffler and exhaust pipe because it was rusted out. He talked me in to an "upgrade" for both saying it would help gas mileage and performance. Total cost: $700. Only a few miles after I left the shop, the "Check Engine" light came on. Since I had to leave town the next day, I made an appointment with my regular mechanic to check it out when I returned. My mechanic called me and said that Ed had missed putting in one of the oxygen sensors that had been removed with the converter! I took the truck back to Ed's and explained to Ed what my mechanic had told me. After listening to him tell me all the reasons why that could not have happened, I convinced him to put the truck on the rack. After looking at it, he admitted that they missed it (he said it was "hidden" so that was why they missed it) and then said he would have to charge me extra to install it. I argued that since I paid to have the converter installed, the oxygen sensor should be part of the installation and he, as the expert, should not have missed the sensor and I did not feel I should pay for it. Ed "lost" it at this point and started screaming at me about how horrible it was that I was asking him to do this at no charge and that I was trying to rip him off (!). He said "God was going to get me" for this. This went on for about a minute. After he finally calmed down, he agreed to not charge me for fixing it but told me that bad things were going to happen to me because I made him do this. After they installed it, the check engine light came on again after a few miles. I took it to my mechanic and he fixed it and told me that they had done very shoddy work and that the new oxygen sensor they installed had failed. He also replaced the muffler that Ed had replaced and said it was a cheap piece of junk. I have never had such a terrible experience with any place before and I have never written a complaint but Ed's is so bad that I wanted to warn everyone to stay away from him. |
