To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to you today because I believe that I am the victim of a moving company scam. I believe that I have been cheated out of nearly $1,100 and let down by not only the company, but the government that is supposed to protect me and my family. I accepted a job in Kelowna, BC with a company that was willing to pay up to $4,000 to cover moving expenses to relocate my family. These expenses included travel, hotel, food and other necessities. My wife, my 6-month old daughter and myself hit the road shortly after squaring up everything back home. We hired a moving company that we felt gave us a fair quote and after doing some research, felt they were trustworthy. Below is a copy of the quote my wife received: Good Day Mrs. Wilson, It would be a pleasure to include you as a potential customer of A-2-Z Moving & Storage Ltd. and we welcome the opportunity to help make your move from Toronto, ON To Kelowna, BC A-2-Z Moving began in 1992 as one of Calgary’s original family operated. Toll Free: 1-877-568-1943 Calgary: (403) 680-1657 Ontario: (647) 523-1657 First and foremost, the woman that provided us with this quote no longer works with the company. We have been dealing with employees named Laura and Susanna since we moved. In the quote regarding the weight, our belongings totaled well over 4,000 lbs, which made the price go up considerably. We were fine with that, however the section that states anything over 2,000 lbs is charged at $0.50 flat rate is where our problem is. They did not waive the $450 fee and ended up charging us $200 more than they should have. When we pointed this out, they refused to make the change and said nothing could be done without a manager's approval. When we asked to speak with a manager, they refused. Also, the free mattress coverings and furniture wraps got charged to us anyway when we received an invoice. We disputed that as well, yet they refused to change the invoice to match the quote. Also, although the quote promises no hidden fees, we also received charges for other coverings and staircases when our belongings had already been loaded into the moving truck at the beginning. We were told these charges would be waived, yet they never were. The invoice we received was for $3,330.88. This price was approx. $1,100 more than what it should have been, given the charges we were told would be waived or provided in the quote. We couldn't afford to pay this even with the money my new job was providing. When we arrived in Kelowna, we contacted the company to see when our belongings would arrive. They said they didn't know and would call us back. They never returned our calls or answered our e-mails and we had to continue calling them back before receiving an answer. When we received an answer, they said Dec 1st. The truck did not show up on Dec 1st, rather Dec 3rd. When it showed up, we were still in the process of disputing the invoice because the company either wouldn't return our calls, e-mails or let us talk to any form of management. We were simply ignored and couldn't afford to pay the price of the invoice, so our belongings were not unloaded and the truck left. The driver of the truck that arrived in Kelowna was a representative of Troy Moving, who, as it turns out, handled our goods from the beginning. We were never informed that Troy Moving would be responsible for our belongings. When they picked up our goods in Toronto, they told us they were simply taking it to A-2-Z's warehouse and nothing more. This turned out to be false. A-2-Z never told us that Troy was responsible. The driver went on to tell us that our goods would be stored in Kelowna. This was on the 3rd. On Monday Dec 5th, we contacted A-2-Z who told us our belongings had been left in a truck overnight, then driven back to Calgary to their warehouse. We asked them to deliver our belongings at the new price on the invoice and they refused, giving us a new total that was even higher and well out of our price range. Unable to make this payment, we were forced to borrow money from family to pay the $3,330.88 and arrange for our belongings to be brought to us by another party. During our time dealing with the company, we have been lied to, ignored and eventually, Laura and Susanna just began hanging up the phone whenever we called to find out information. My wife and I have e-mails and phone records to back up this claim. When we turned to the police for help, they told us this was a civil matter and there was nothing they could do. We contacted lawyers for advice, but they could only advise us to pay the invoice and take the company to small claims court. We turned to an ombudsman's office who told us the same thing. We feel that we have been let down by our governing bodies that are in place to protect us from criminals like these. Yes, we may go to small claims court and win a settlement, but we won't see results in time to save my daughter's first Christmas from being completely ruined. This issue should have never come this far. It is apalling that this company can continue to practice unethical and incompetent business. Sincerely, Bill Wilson |
