THRIFTY RENTAL CAR COMPANY scam AMMAN, Other |
2nd of Jul, 2011 by User840312 |
I was visiting Jordan as a tourist on June 28-July 1, on June 29 I went to Thrifty Car Rental in downtown Amman to rent a car for 3 days. I rent a new C4 for JD 40 / day and also paid a guarantee JD 350. on June 29, around 4 PM local time I got a car accident on my way from Petra to Dead Sea, it was in the area called Al-Tafilla. The road was very slippey so I couldn't manage to control my wheel and I crashed into the right side of the road. Right after the accident I still remember that everything still working, the radio, the AC, The wiper... and I checked the machine and all part of the car, and all I could see was the damage on the body of the car. so in short way, after I done with Police report and hospital, a guy from the Thrifty came to take a look at the car and send me a replacement car. However after he looked at the car he called his manager and told him that this was a total lost accident, and they forced me to pay on the spot JD 1,000. (approx USD 1,200) They insisted it was written in the contract. However help me understand is that the right way to do, like when the accident happened do I need to pay on the spot immediately? in my understanding (correct me if i'm wrong) they need to send the car to the garage to do the estimation before asking their customer to pay any amount, and as far I remember there is insurance which covered on the deductable amount that I already paid to them earlier when I rent the car and sign the contract. They keep on insisting and since I was alone, I didn't know what should I do, and they don't speak english very well, at the end I paid JD 400. And that was not the worse, when I called the manager, he told me that he tried to charge another JD 350 from my card for another 'guarantee" for the damage car, and another JD 500 for guarantee of the replacement car and the worse part was he told me after he tried to charge the card without my acknowledge! Lucky the card was reached its limit, so he couldn't charge that amount. and fyi the replacement car was a very old Honda car! in total I lost JD 875 (approx USD 1,000) only for something that I don't understand I lost the 1st guarantee that I paid JD 350, the rental fees which I only use for 2 days but they charged full 3 x JD 40 = JD 120 (supposed... but then when I called my bank it was charged JD 125) and cash of JD 400 as what they called 'compensation' for the accident. |
