Tanoe Reed Blue Monday Exclusives BEWARE! Lied and sold Damaged Maltese Puppy. Also sells Yorkies. Bluefield West Virginia |

If you are considering purchasing a Maltese or Yorkie puppy from Tanoe Reed, Blue Monday Exclusives, from Bluefield or Princeton, WV, please read of my extremely unsatisfactory experience with this breeder. My friend and I purchased two very expensive females Maltese puppies from her in February 2009. Tanoe promised to send the puppies with a fecal test and vet check. We were to take the puppies in for a 48 hr. vet check (most breeders allow a minimum of 72 hrs. and my state PA allows 10 days). The first day we had them, my friend and I both noticed blood and mucous in their stool. The next day, at the 48 hr. vet check, my vet diagnosed her with a grade 3 luxating patella and severe coccidial infection (that explained the bloody, mucous-laced stool). She also suggested I test for giardia, which it turned out my puppy's sister tested positive for. A grade 3 luxating patella is a major knee problem that will eventually require surgery to ensure a dog's quality of life. My vet also noted an underbite (which was obvious and that Tanoe did not disclose), and ears too caked with wax to be able to examine. My vet filled out an "unfit to sell" paper. When I confronted Tanoe about these problems, she claimed that the puppy had passed her fecal test and vet check prior to being released to us. She offered no proof of these claims. From this point forward, we entered into negotiations on how to handle this matter. This month-long affair broke down eventually when I realized the best Tanoe would offer me was for me to return the puppy to her, whereby she promised to refund my money once she had resold her. She made no mention of what she would tell a future buyer of the puppy about the puppy's knee, other than that it was not my business if I planned to return her. She offered a replacement puppy, but after my friend's and my experience with a coccidia and giardia-laden puppy, I was reluctant to have another one from her. Plus, both coccidia and giardia are difficult to eradicate once a kennel is affected AND coccidia-infected stool has a sweet smell. That explained why this puppy also constantly tried to eat her stool! Every time she was successful in eating her stool, she was reinfecting herself with coccidia. This was NOT the type of puppy I wanted to own! So, Tanoe's only offer was for me to return the puppy 6-8 hours to WV, and be out both the puppy plus the amount I paid for her, AND trust that Tanoe would pay me if and when the puppy sold. Initially, I thought about agreeing to that plan because I really wanted my money back and she left me no other options. But the more I thought about it, I had to wonder if Tanoe would disclose the puppy's knee condition to a future buyer. I felt like it was my responsibility to alert any potential buyer about the history of the puppy. I would never want anyone to go through what our family has gone through. By this point, Tanoe was threatening to rescind all offers of taking the puppy back unless I agreed to her terms within a day or two. Since she gave me an ultimatum, I responded with my own. I asked her to refund my money before I returned the puppy, to meet me exactly half-way between our homes to pick the puppy up, and that she inform me how she planned to address the puppy's knee to a future buyer. If she chose not to act responsibly as a breeder, by refunding the cost of an unhealthy puppy and not stating upfront that she would inform the new buyer of the puppy about the puppy's knee, I stated that it was my responsibility to all future buyers of her puppies to know how she operated. I stated that I would take my experience public. At that point, Tanoe cut off all communication. This happened today, April 1st, 2009. I finally called Tanoe's vet to inform them that I would be attempting to return the puppy. This is perhaps the most disturbing part of my story. The vet, a prominent one in Bluefield, initials GVH, had never seen either puppy EVER. Tanoe had lied to me about having her vet check the puppies before releasing them to us. Had the vet actually checked her, he would have noticed the knee problem. As for the fecal test that Tanoe said was clear, this is what they told me: there was ONE fecal test done 2 days before Tanoe delivered the puppies to us. Why was there only ONE test when she was delivering TWO puppies? Additionally, when someone takes in a stool sample, the vet simply trusts that the owner brought in the correct dog's stool. There is NO guarantee that it is definitely that dog's stool. In my best guess, Tanoe took stool from a healthy dog that she had on her premises. I say that because 1) coccidial infections have a 13 day incubation period. Coccidia does not show up within 48 hours due to "stress." Plus, the levels in both my friend's puppy and mine were so high, the puppies needed a twice-as-long treatement period. 2) The stool was bloody and laced with mucous as soon as we received them. My bottom line is this: Are you willing to take the risk of purchasing from Tanoe Reed? She LIED directly to me about taking the puppy in for a vet check, and potentially lied about the stool sample. My experience with her is still unfinished. I post this because by sharing my experience, I hope to educate and alert other potential buyers. I would NEVER want someone to go through what we have this past month. Also, PLEASE read her contract thoroughly. After her experience with me, my best guess is that she will revise it to make it as iron-clad in her favor as possible. As another warning, when I called her from the vet's office following the 48 hr check, her initial response to the diagnosis was "What, am I now going to have to change my contract to only allow 24 hours?" Please learn from my experience. If I can prevent at least one other person from going through what we have been through, this post will have been worth it. If you need more details, feel free to contact me. Wolfe
