Sport & Health Club Contract scam Stafford, Virginia

Want to join a gym? Find another one and watch out for these bogus poilicies: They want you to pre-pay the last month as a condition of signing up, but they will charge you for an additional month if you do not cancel before the 26th of the month (somewhere in the contract which we all read). They do this because the law allows them to...banks cannot dispute or cancel payment if you do not meet the company's policies due to a new law that went into affect last year (2010). So I recommend paying manually for as much as you can tollerate. My wife and I had our gym memberships for over one year and had pre-paid the last month's membership when we signed up. If I were paying by check every month, it would be in their court to come after a final payment, but because I set up automatic payments for convenience (not mine, apparently--the bank's customer--but for the gym's convenience) I cannot rescind my payment...and it hasn't even cleared yet! I cancelled on April 29th--tried walking into the location where I purchased the membership, but they would not accept my cancellation. It had to be in writing by email. So I emailed it in, but too late. Not only had I paid for the last month and would NOT be refunded (May), but I was going to be charged for June as well! Nothing I can do, too bad for me. SInce it was me and my wife, Sport & Health gets an extra $160 for absolutely no services in return. Oh sure, we can go use the gym, but since we haven't used it in the past 6 months, what's the likelihood? My wife broke her shoulder blade and couldn't use the gym if she wanted to. I'm deploying to the Middle East and don't have the time between my work, finishing home projects, and all the military preps. So if you're looking for a gym membership, I DO NOT recommend Sport & Health; but if you have no other options, then definitely pay as you go...and by check! That way you can cancel on your own terms.
