Shoppers Direct Shoppers Point of Sale Lottery/Sweepstakes $3950.00 Check Received- Looks Authentic- Call the bank first! Las Vegas , Nevada |
10th of Jul, 2011 by User814409 |
My wife received a $3950.00 check today. The envelope was posted in Canada with no return address. The check was printed on Docugard paper and certainly looked authentic. The letter with the check came from Shoppers Direct in Las Vegas. The lottery drawing she had "won" was in London England. The total winning was $65,000 with this first check sent to assist paying the British Lottery/Sweepstakes Tax and Insurance. Before calling the enclosed phone number to "activate" the check I called First American Bank in Chicago and got through to the fraud department, emailed all of the info. to a wonderful person who immediately called back to let me know that the check was not good. I then called the number on the letter and spoke to Ray Owen. He started to tell me that we had won this money and I then told him that I had already called the bank and found that the check was no good. He hung up. Michael- Xenia, Ohio |

I just received a letter today with a check for $1, 790 that looks REAL. The letter says I won $65, 000 and to please deposit the check for $1, 790 in my bank and call Mark McDonald at 1-647-995-4528 to claim my prize. The letter states that the check for $1, 790 was issued to assist me in paying the amount of $1, 025 which is the insurance and handling charges I will have to pay to receive the $65, 000. I called the number (to play along and see what he would say) and spoke with Mark McDonald who has a strong accent, he told me that I would need to send him a money order for $1, 025 by Western Union. I am not sending these BOZO's anything. How sad that there are people out there doing this. I am going to take this to my bank and call consumer protection. Something has to be done... |

I recieved a letter today with a check for $1, 790.00 enclosed from Shoppers Point of Sale Sweepstakes. I suspected it was a scam so I went on line to check it out. Just as I suspected it is! The check was written on the Wells Fargo Bank of Van Vert, Oh. so I called the bank and talked with a woman who said that it is indeed a scam. I'm so glad that I went on line and discovered it is all a scam. You hear about these things happening to others and hope it never happens to you. But thank the Lord he gave me the wisdom to check it out first.

I've received my check today also and had to give them a call the guy on the other ends sounded weird and knowing what I've heard in the past, never fell for the scam sounded to good to be true, people like that should spend time in prison, I only would like to know they get away with it. Thanks Anne |

My almost 16 year old son received a check for $3, 900 as well. I took the check to Wells Fargo Bank and they are sending it to their Fraud Investigators. I suggest everyone does the same or call-mail to the nearest Wells Fargo so that others can be protected from identity theft. |

I received the letter and check also. They said i won $65, 000.00 and mailed me a check for 3, 900.00. They wanted me to "deposit" the check and call them for the rest. I called the Better Business Bureau and they were able to verify it was fake. The scam supposedly works like this: The consumer cashes the fake check and mails a portion of it back to the sweepstakes for taxes or something. The check bounces and the consumer has to repay the bank the full amount. |

Hi everyone...it is 10/1/11, I just received basically the same letter and check with a different name on it...James Dickson at 1-647-862-1998, the operation director is Janet Green...wow...its a shame...thanks for the info... |

I too received a similar letter (dated 9/19/11) and check. The check amount was $3, 950.00 written on an M&T bank out of Baltimore Md from the Elavator Modernization Co. I was supposed to call Ray Owen at 905-598-1979. Obviously this is a scam and I did nothing with the letter or check but it truley amazes me how many people think they can get something for nothing. If we as a society continue to be this gullible then these scammers will continue to get away with this time and time again. |

I just received this letter today and it is totally bogus...If you get the letter, just throw it away. It definitely looks like a real check but it's not. I think I am going to contact my local police department and report it. |
