I received a threating letter captioned "FILE UNDER REVIEW" from RCMB, Retrieval-Masters Creditors Bureau, Inc COLLECTION AGENCY, dated December 7, 2010, account# 010004747****, stating "We have benn authorized to contact you regarding your past due account with our client, National Review, for magazines that you purchased in the amount of $19.95. ------etc." I have not subscribed to National Review and have not received any issues of National Review, nor have I received any corespondence from National Review stating that I owed them any money for a subscription. In my opinion this is a mail fraud scam . Apparently this company has committed this kind of scam multiple times and based on other internet reports it has a reputation for unethical and probably illegal practices. Many people, especialy senior citizens or very busy people will fall pry to this scare tactic and pay wtihout questionaning the validity of the claim. |

My dad got the same thing. Supposedly he had a free trial for four issues then had to cancel if he didn't want to be billed. Whether he signed up for a free trial or not I don't know but he says he didn't. Anyhow, we got the same notice from RMCB for $19.95. I called them first and they said I would have to send a letter of dispute to them before they could do anything. I then found the number for the National Review subscription services and called them. She described what the offer was and said she would cancel it and contact RMCB. I'm sure they get these calls all the time on the free trial bait and hook plan. I can't really say it's a scam because I didn't view any previous mail relating to this but if there was no initiation of the free trial then something is screwed up. |
