Pinyan Labs
Pinyan Labs Ron Pinyan Sr unethical/overbreeder of Silver Labs Ankeny, Iowa
18th of Jan, 2011 by User454106
We purchased a puppy from Ron Pinyan/Pinyan Labs earlier this year... we purchased her after (believing) we did our homework checking out the OFA ratings and lineage of the breeding pair and by the glorified hunting background of these dogs. When dealing with Ron on the phone he had answers for everything and "I'll tell you what" (his favorite line) snowballed us into believing he was a reputable breeder.

I constantly asked for pictures of the puppy week after week, which he complied, but the pictures looked of a sickly/scared pup.(I will attach to this report)Days before she shipped to us, I again contacted him and asked her weight at her last vet visit before her flight (as health certificate has to be dated 10 days prior to transport) I was told he didn't remember specifically, but the litter as a whole were between 10-12 lbs.

When I picked her up at the airport, she was in a 12x18 pet carrier. She had fur on the crown of her head missing/thinning (myvet suspected a skin condition), her nails had never been trimmed, she had a gash on her side (that has since healed to a thick 2 inch scar) and was all of 5 lbs! She weighed in @ 5lbs 7 ozs at the vet 7 days later...Ron listed the total weight of pup and carrier on the airline paperwork as a total of 6 lbs! Her dew claw removal was a "butcher job"- obviously done by himself to save $$. This is @ 8 weeks remember!

Fast forward...the pup is now 7 1/2 mos old and moves like shes 12. She has a hard time getting up, can't run/play with the other dogs like a pup should and is in constant pain. Yesterday we had our worst fears confirmed. She has dysplasia in both back hips and in her front left shoulder. Bone spurs are already visible on the x rays. Not a life that ANY dog should live. She is a big part of our hearts and will be spayed and made comfortable here in our home for the rest of her days on earth!

Ron breeds his females heat after heat..resulting in unhealthy/low weight pups..if you follow his blogs carefully you will notice he looses many pups in their first weeks (almost) every litter. The blog also conveniently only goes back 5-6 mos...again, unless you follow his history, you would not see the same dogs being bred 6 mos after her last litter. I started following after noticing the parents of MY pup having yet another litter as of late Nov (my pup was born end of May).

If he is not overbreeding and in it only for the $$- how can one man solely take care of multiple litters (4-5 litters in Nov-Dec) in the capacity that will produce quality/healthy pups? Answer, he can't.

He lives in a modest neighborhood, not a lot of land, but a large building out back...obviously to house all these animals. Following his web site he has had 10 different females give birth since August..only 6 are listed on his website.

Pictures of the worst pups, being advertised at a low price for quick sale because they are beyond 8 weeks, have been removed from the blog. One picture still sticks in my mind of a very sickly 10 week old pup that looked like it was 4 weeks old! Another of a group of pups, with very small/sick looking pups in the mix of healthy puppies- those pictures too have been removed!

Please get the word out NOT TO PURCHASE A PUP FROM PINYAN LABS OR RON PINYAN! "Breeders" like this have got to be shut down and I will do my part!

No dog/puppy or family willing to give their love..should have to be put through that heartache just to put a few extra $$ in HIS pocket! SHUT HIM DOWN!

I also purchased a Silver Lab from this breeder. She had ear mites and worms. She is healthy now that I have her, but she was not well cared for prior to my purchasing her. Please do not buy from this breeder as he does not take care of his dogs.

I also purchased a puppy that was from Pinyan Labs through a pet store in August of 2008 (my dog was born in May so he is almost 4 years old now). We have had a lot of trouble with him - he has a very sensitive stomach and for the first few years of his life, there was no dog food we could feed him without him having constant diarrhea. We were taking him to the vet all the time because sometimes he would have blood in his stools since they were so loose for so long. He has a beautifully colored coat (charcoal) but the coat itself is not very nice - it is constantly flaky and he is always itching even though we use medicated shampoo, conditioner and spray on conditioner between baths. For a lab, he is not a very smart dog. It took us until he was about 1.5 years old to get him potty trained. He is also very aggressive for a lab. He is the only dog in our house, so I dont know where he learned these behaviors as we have never mistreated him. We have tried to get him safe exposure to other dogs and have taken him to obedience classes, agility classes, the AKC good citizenship classes and even anger management classes that were offered by our trainer. It has maybe helped a little, but he is still very aggressive around other dogs. We tried to foster a dog last spring, but that didnt work because he was always after her, and even attacked and bit her at one point. We had to keep them in separate rooms or on leads if they were going to be in the same room at the same time (she wouldn't fight back - she would just crouch down on the ground as he was attacking her - so it was definitely all on his part). I think his behavior problems are due in part to the fact that he was separated from his mother way too soon. Ron had sold him to a pet store (Pet Land) and separated him from his mother at 6 weeks old. Reputable breeders keep the pups with the mother until at least 8 or 9 weeks, sometimes up to 12 weeks, so that the puppy can learn proper interactions with other dogs. I think poor breeding also caused his health problems (diarrhea, constantly flaky coat, etc). I shudder to think about the bone and joint problems that will liekly develop as he ages. That being said, I love my dog and would never get rid of him, and I do like the color of his coat (charcoal), but I would never purchase another puppy through Pinyan Labs again. I think trying to breed these "designer" colors causes more problems than it is worth. The next time I am ready to get a dog, I am going to do a lot of research to find a reputable breeder that cares about the quality of their pups.

Also, I do think it's suspicious how many times a year Ron breeds his bitches. I keep an eye on his website and he has been breeding my dog's mother twice a year for multiple years - which is WAY to frequently and is harmful to the mother and the pups. I also think it's suspicious how many female dogs he has and breeds. Buyer beware.
