Penrac, LLC Enterprise Rent-A-Car Poor rep that needs money required damage waiver using weasel tactics Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania |

I recently needed to rent a vehicle for an upcoming tour. I only needed to drive it 10+ hours to my main tour stop where the vehicle was going to safely sit parked for the remainder of the tour. I've rented from this location in the past with same insurance coverage and never had a problem. I filled out an online reservation prior to my departure and had a quote for around $400 for two weeks. During pickup of the vehicle, I was immediately asked about optional benefits from a rep named Paul who was filling out my ticket. I specifically told him that I did not need any extras or options. He asked about my insurance and I told him I had minimum liability coverage only. I've never been in an accident and I'm a safe driver. The credit card I was using covers theft and damages for vehicles valued at $50k or less. I was renting a cheap compact Toyota Corolla. Paul stated that since I did not have full coverage, that I HAD to put a damage waiver on it. He further stated that without the damage waiver they could not rent the car. Seemed like a bunch of BS to me, but I was already running late for my tour and did not have time to argue. He printed out the slip, circled a bunch of areas for me to sign and initial, which I stupidly did without fully reading. He gave me the keys, only really checked the fuel level/mileage, and I was off on my way. Looking at the contract later, I discovered Paul also signed me up for a Roadside Assistance Program which cost around $3.99/day and was never even discussed or mentioned. I obviously didn't need it as I have AAA and I'm not going to be careless and lose the keys. I was however careless enough to not read everything he circled before signing but I wouldn't expect such dirtbag, weasel tactics from a legitimate business. The contract clearly stated that the damage waiver and RAP were optional and that I could cancel them at any time. I called the office as soon as I could to cancel both. I spoke with another rep there named Mike. He proceeded to state that it's their policy to sign people up for this BS if they don't have full coverage because they've had "problems in the past." He then said he would talk to Paul and call me back. Being on the road and trying to have a good time, I wasn't trying to spend a lot of effort with this situation. I live extremely modest with no debt, and money isn't something I really care about or strive to attain. It was more about principle. I get a voicemail later from Mike. He states pretty much verbatim what Paul initially told me when I went to pick up the vehicle - SINCE I DID NOT HAVE FULL COVERAGE, THE DAMAGE WAIVER WAS REQUIRED. I COULD NOT CANCEL THE DAMAGE WAIVER BECAUSE WITHOUT IT, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RENT THE VEHICLE IN THE FIRST PLACE. He did state he would cancel the RAP, but looking at my credit card bill now I see that was never done. I have sent the voicemail to Enterprise corporate as I previously spoke with someone there and they stated that the damage waiver and everything else was optional and that I could cancel and be refunded. The reps at the Tunkhannock office are just dirtbags desperate for a commission who will repeatedly lie to you to try and make their wallets fatter. The unnecessary damage waiver may have been a good thing though because Paul identified no damage on the vehicle. When I looked at the car after I arrived at my destination, I noticed there was a dent and paint chip on the top driver's side door and looked like the whole panel had been resprayed at some point and had orange peel. The car also had other issues with alignment and pulling to the right, brakes needed to be pumped to safely stop, and a weak battery that needed to be jumped after sitting for over a week. I'm sure if they actually canceled the damage waiver, they would have been even bigger slime ball scumbags desperate for worthless money and charged me for all those problems that weren't identified prior to me leaving. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT EVEN IF YOU VERBALLY AGREE TO DECLINE OPTIONAL COVERAGE, THAT THEY WILL PROBABLY CIRCLE AND HAVE YOU UNKNOWINGLY SIGN THEM ANYWAY. READ EVERYTHING THEY CIRCLED BEFORE JUST SIGNING BECAUSE THEY ARE DESPERATE SCUMBAGS! I will never rent from there again. |
