Payless car rental claim of car damage orlando, Florida

I rented a car on 2-12-2011 thru 2-15-2011 , i showed up to pick the rental car and the sals man Rod was pretty forcefull about me purchasing the supplimental damage insurance ( to the point of it being a sales pitch that he gets commishion on ) after i declined it he seemed very ignorant and upset that i would not purchase the insurance , his whole attitude changed.
With the attitude i received i thought it was suspicious and it didn't give me a good feeling,i received the car keys and was directed to my car location with out any further instruction, out of instinct i walked around the vechile with my wife and took photos of the damage on the vechile, no one from Payless was there.
So we left and drove the car for three days and upon the rental return i parked the car at the check out isle and the attandant walked around the vehicle , we completed the rental and boarded the bus.
About a month and a half went by and i received a letter the car was damaged and it accompanied a photo and it shows damage clearly noticable, there is no doubt of the damage is present but it didn't happen while we had the vechile , what happen after we left is my guess.? Payless attached my credit card for$567.00 and took the money for the damages, I have not received any proir notice or information of the damages untill that letter .The damage was supposedly 2-15-2011 and the repair appraisel didn't take place untill 3-19-2011 and then i was charged for 2 days of nonuse rental time but it took them over 40 days to even get the appraisel?something just don't add up.
You know when you get that feeling that something just isn't right you should just walk away ,if not you will be in my position . I just think it is bad business for the un professional attitude of the rental personel, I was a customer and will never do business with Payless Rental car again ,I think i am a victim of fraud and oppurtunity.

We had a similar experience and haven't yet received a demand for payment (returned car over 3 wks ago)
What do we do? I dont' want to call these scam artists and am hoping they forgot about us. Any damage a month ago should have been fixed or at least appraised by now or doesn't represent a loss of use problem.
