April 8th, 2013 My Elderly Parents ordeal with One Hour Air Conditioning One Hour Air Conditioning Heating and Heating Ca. State Contractors License 878533 2712 East La Cadena Drive Riverside, Ca. and 330 Myers St. Riverside, Ca. 92503 The contractor's License is the same on both 878533 I just found out last week April 3rd that my elderly parents had replaced their entire heating and cooling system in their house in Temecula, California. I was upset because when my Dad told me they were charged $16,000 and then needed all of their duct work replaced for an additional charge of $4900. I am in the HVAC Industry and knew this was an extremely high price. It all started with a problem with NO HEAT in the house. They had a coupon for $49 to do a service check up on their system and called One Hour. As my dad says a real nice young man came to the house and began looking into the problem. He then told them they had a cracked heat exchanger and needed his supervisor to come to the job. The supervisor showed up and told them how dangerous the equipment was because of the carbon monoxide that could leak into the house. My Dad asked if the part could be changed and the answer from the supervisor was NO, the part was thousands of dollars and the entire system must be replaced. My Dad did not work in the industry and the supervisor went on to tell him rules about the gas thaT were no longer available. He just added more confusing words to increase the pressure for them to say YES to the repairs. I asked my Dad why he did not call me or tell them he was going to call his son and get my opinion. He said he knew I was busy and did not want to bother me. I am in my 60's and my Dad is still being my Dad by worrying about me. What he doesn't realize is I have been more upset with this story and now involved anyway. I just can't believe there are people making a living from elderly people in this fashion. So they agreed to the repairs which included a FREE upgrade from a 4 ton unit to a 5 ton unit. The installation began and my Dad said they were nice and put booties on and began the work. It was then that they suggested that the NEW 5 Ton unit has an 18" duct on it and the old one had a 16" and if it was him he would change the duct. I looked at the duct work and noticed the 18" went about 6 feet before it was reduced at a tee wye (a tee in duct work) which splits the duct to two areas. I also looked at the electrical at the unit and noted the new 5 ton name plate has 33 amps minimum capacity. The fuses are 35 amp but when I checked the electrical panel and the breaker marked AC it has number 10 wire which is only good to 30 amps. I am concerned that this can be a potential safety/fire issue. The City has not inspected the job as of yet and I instructed my Dad to make sure the inspector checks this out. I can just see another potential change order coming for thousands more dollars. The 5 ton wouldn't be free if it doesn't work unless they get more money to make it right. The bottom line to anyone reading this, DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY! MAKE SURE YOU GET A SECOND OPINION AND IF YOU CALLED SOMEONE ELSE FIRST DON'T CALL THEM, REMEMBER THEY HAVE TWO ADDRESSES AND THE OTHER ADDRESS MAY MAKE THE OTHER ONE'S PRICE LOOK GOOD.
