I purchased carpet and tile to be installed. The carpet was installed with few issues - the installer gouged the baseboard, but I had to repaint it anyway so I didn't complain.
The tile is a different story. The installer stated several times throughout the installation that he "isn't a tile guy," and "tile isn't my thing." He constantly complained about how much he was getting paid and that the store didn't know how to bid a job. He said all the owners do is fight, they're going to close up soon, etc.
A two day job turned into a 5 day job, even though the installer used the existing sub-floor instead of installing a new one, which I was told was included in the price (although it is not itemized on the quote). We are talking about 3 steps and an approximate 3' x 3' landing to be tiled.
I had people from the store out several times throughout the installation process. They all agreed, at the time, that it wasn't being installed correctly, but assured me it would be made right in the end. After the job was done, however, suddenly they all tell me it "doesn't look that bad." The owner told me it will cost them too much money to have someone tear it up and redo it the correct way.
The tiles were cut incorrectly - some too short and most are crooked. The corners where the tiles meet are not square. The grout lines on 3 steps are not even. There are huge gaps at the walls where the tiles weren't cut big enough. Some places have piles of grout; other places have no grout at all. There are gouges in my paneling
The installer smeared grout all over my paneling, and tracked it all over my brand new carpet, and ground it into an existing carpet in my basement, which he used to clean his tools. He didn't clean any of this up - I did. He gouged my driveway where he cut the carpet on it. He spilled grout and spread tile dust all over my driveway, and then tracked it into the house.
I called today to get an update on what they planned to do to make this right. I was told that "I couldn't be satisfied" and that they didn't plan on doing anything. Now I have to sue them or be satisfied with a floor that looks terrible.
These people are a scam. Stay away. |
