At the beginning of 2011, I recieved an email from a record company called MKVibe. At first I was a bit suspicious, I'd had a few record companies show interest in the past but this one seemed a little more genuine. They said they were interested in my music, said I had great potential and wanted me to come down to their office in Milton Keynes. I made an appointment and made my way to meet them for the first time. I brought my dad along for support (I also wanted him to judge whether or not this seemed legitimate). I met the girl that I had been emailing, she listened to my tracks and asked me what they were about. She said she really liked them. The "big boss", Andy, came in to the office and introduced himself. We chatted for an hour or so. He said I had a lot of potential and that I could make it big. He says I have the look and the sound; I'm the complete package. He went on to promise me great things. He then went on to talk about the cost. He said it would be split 50/50. He said I would have to pay 800, but I do not believe for a second that MKvibe paid anything into this. I signed the documents and handed over my money. I was excited. This was all new to me. They quickly arranged a photoshoot. I headed back down to the office after I finished work (which is also where their studio was). I wasn't too disappointed with the photoshoot, I was quite impressed with the photos and quality of the photo's. MKVibe use a service called eBooks. It's basically a online book which plays the artists music and videos, has information about the artist and has photos of the artist. When I first saw my eBook, I was devastated. I had never seen such bad photoshopping in my life. It was plain, it was boring. It was not ME what so ever. It did not represent me or my music. I told them straight away that I was not happy. A month or so later, I shot a music video. It was in the same studio that the photoshoot was shot. It was just me, a camera and a white screen behind me. Nothing spectacular. There was no direction at all and as it was my first experience with shooting a music video, I didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing. I knew it was going to look terrible. I was right. I accidentally came across my video on youtube. I had no idea how long it had been there. I cried when I saw it. It was terrible quality, it had been edited shoddily and I was not impressed with the shots they used. I emailed MKVibe and told them that I was not happy. They replied by saying that they have no idea why the video was public, as it was a "rough cut". Which I'm not too sure if I believe. Shortly after, my first single was released. I was excited because I was told my track was going to be edited so it would sound great. I wondered if they had done this. But no, they just used the demo track that I provided them with. So now people may or may not be buying my DEMO track on iTunes rather than the properly produced final track. I was also not told that my song was going to be on iTunes in the first place. I knew they would be selling it on their website using paypal, but that was all I knew. So I decided to set up my own iTunes distribution account. It cost me about 30 to set up myself so when I found out that MKVibe had already done this for me, I was a little upset. Lack of communication. I emailed them and they said I could probably get the money back from this, so I was a little happier. In April, MKVibe held a single release party for myself and about 15 other artists. The night was a good night. They messed up on my backing track and introduction, but it was a fun night nevertheless. At this stage in my life; I was having a few financial problems. It got to the stage where I couldn't even afford to feed myself. I messaged Andy and told him about my situation. I asked if it was still possible to claim that 30 back as I was desperate. He didn't reply to the email. What a surprise. I have found out that they only reply to emails if it's not regarding money or statistics. Recently, I went back to their office to talk about a few things. I don't think any of the original employees that were working for MKVibe half a year ago are still working there today. Maybe they felt guilty that the company they are working for are scamming innocent people. I have family and friends who are into video and photography. That would be my photoshoot and video sorted for free. I'm into webdesign and photoshop. That would be my website sorted. I could get myself gigs at various venues and call it a "single release party". MKVibe have done nothing for me which I couldn't do myself. So basically, I was ripped off. They never reply to my emails and I rarely hear from them. I occasionally get the odd group email telling me about different websites to register with to promote my music. I got the impression that it was their job to get me heard. I got myself an interview and my track played on the radio, that's more than they have ever done for me. If MKVibe have contacted you or you're thinking of contacting them. Please don't. I have heard many stories similar to mine. I want nothing to do with them any more and I would do anything to get even half of the money back.
