Marvel Beauty Schools Lack of structure, lack of teaching, lack of professionalism, favoritism, no regard for students Ottawa, Ontario |

I attended this institute in 2010-2011, at a cost of $10,500. This certainly was not worth the money I paid, and I am still trying to find a lawyer to help me recoup the cost of what was the worse school I have ever attended out of my own pocket. When I first started my course for hair design, there was only 1 other student starting with me. There was 2 teachers plus an extra teacher who taught specifically cutting technique, which seemed fairly reasonable given the amount of students already attending, and near graduation. However, in the second week, one of the regular teachers quit to join another beauty school, so we had only one teacher plus the part time teacher. After about 5 weeks in, another group started, 6 new students and myself and the other student who started with me was held back in our course until the new group caught up with us, which is where the problems started. There was some structure at first, we started learning the basics but as the other students started to graduate in large groups, the school needed us on the floor doing clients hair and none of us were ready, except for the teacher's favorites, who somehow went from being a beginner to being a novice with hair design in as little as 2 weeks time, while the rest of us still had trouble with the basics. To make things even more suspicious, was the fact the teacher's favorites were often not at school so how could they had learned anything without attending. Hair design is hands on, not something you can learn out of a book or watching a video. By 2 months in, there was only 9 students left, all new within that 2 month period. We all had to do clients, but learning had stopped all together, and there was no more structure. The teacher and part time teacher would be giving each other lap dances, having girl talk with the 2 favored students and simply not doing their job. Most of the other students including myself struggled to do the basics in hair design. In December, after having not learned anything new, a teacher who would often put students down to other students behind their back, rigging of hair competitions, drunk and stoned teachers, teachers hanging out with their favoured... I filed a formal complaint to head office, and to my dismay they retired the administrator, let go of the part time teacher, and kept the lazy gossipy teacher. They brought in a new administrator to help clean up the school, but sadly she did far from that. She instead would have her brother and best friend hang out at the school in her office all the time or she was on personal phone calls so she was too busy to bother with any student complaints. If she did come out of her office, it was to get her hair done. By April, a new larger group of students started, and guess what?! We still had not learned anything new and my graduation was just a month away! This group started complaining of the same thing, lack of structure, favoritism, lack of education. There was often the teachers NEW favorites fighting with the other girls, and the teacher would just laugh. I graduated with 93% overall average, which when I went into the real world meant nothing, because I wasnt even taught the basics of shampooing/conditioning, very little knowledge of cutting, just a few perms and roll sets, hardly worth 10k. I went back to the school 2 months after graduating, because a group of students had wrote a letter to head office, as i had and someone from head office would be at the school doing an investigation. I went down to share my insight and ask for my money back. I learned that head office forbade the lazy gossipy teacher from teaching me, and that the new administrator was suppose to be my teacher... which means head office openly admitted that I would receive no teacher because I complained. Administrators do administration, not teaching and even if she was told too, she did not... I wasnt even informed of head offices decision for the lazy teacher not teach me. Therefore before anyone chooses this school, please reconsider your decision. |
