Kaplan University Refuses to release my transcripts and degree due to unpaid balance which has been paid. Internet |

I began Kaplan back in 2003. I had to take a year off due to family problems however re-enrolled andcompleted my Associates in criminal justice degree. I was to graduate I completed classes and credits Nov. 2007 and did not want to do the formal graduation so I assumed they would send me my degree. Well it is now 2011, my Fafsa of $21000 is paid in full and I have this CitiFinancial stating I owe them $8000. Also when Kaplan decided to take it upon themselves and apply for a student loan from citifinancial during the transistion I was billed by Kaplan $1200 for the semester in between Fafsa and Citifinancial agreement. So I will admit I am naive when it comes to the whole student loan process, however I was never even made aware these transactions were going on. Well I wanted to finish my degree and move on to a bachelors at a different school. Kaplan refuses to release my transcripts. I paid the $1200 to their collection agency and the agency sent me a receipt. Kaplan still has not taken that debt off their records. I am frustrated, I spent the time and the money for a degree I cant even use. I wish I could afford an atty, but I cant. I dont know what else to do. Anyone have any suggestions? Like others I have called Kaplan and I cant get ahold of anyone.

I wish I had some advice for you but I am in a similar situation with Kaplan and collections. Back in 2004, I also was a student there, working towards an Associates in Criminal Justice. My last semester there, I didn't fill out the FAFSA because I made too much money to be eligible (financial aid). I went to sign in to my classes and had noticed I had been blocked from them. When I contacted my advisor, she informed me that I was suppose to fill out the FAFSA anyway, even if I was uneligible to receive financial assistance. So, after I was blocked from the classes, I was charged for them (in addition to "flunking" the classes, as they believe). How can I fail or be charged for classes that I didn't even take?! And if I remember correctly, my advisor just went ahead and enrolled me in these last few classes, without my "go-ahead". I still have all of the emails from 2004 stating all of this but now that collections has these accusations/debt records, who am I to speak to? I'm assuming they will not have open ears if I try to explain to them what happened. I would assume they are just there to get the money. Originally, the debt started out at a few thousand dollars for the couple of classes that I had supposedly taken. But now, it is approxiametly 7k and I am unable to proceed with my future endeavors because I have a giant, unpaid judgement! I do not know where to go from here but I need to do something. I ordered a copy of my credit report last year and there it was... staring me in the face. : ( |
