I was very excited to attend Kandee Johnson's Glaminar. Being new to the business, I figured that the high price of $495 was not unusual. It was a one-day class in San Francisco. Per the website, I was expecting a lot more based on the hype of the website. The class I signed up for was even called "Become A Pro Make-Up Artist". Phrases like "You won't LEARN WHAT I'M GOING TO TEACH YOU IN ANY MAKE-UP SCHOOL.", "HOW TO MAKE YOUR DREAMS HAPPEN- not to be just a make-up artist, but to be the BEST, MOST sought after make-up artist." "How to start making up to $4,000 a weekend.", etc made me feel that this was a very good class, and considering that Kandee Johnson is such a big YouTube guru, I felt that what she was saying was true. Not only that, she had promised a Legal Bridal Contract worth over the cost of the Glaminar. Here's my problems: As I sat through the class, all of her information had felt as though it was being repeated. The contract worth $500 was a generic legal form that could easily be found online. I heard more stories about Kandee helping others than I heard makeup tips. Also, there was not one moment where we got to try out the techniques she was teaching. At some point, she had people crying and it felt more like a church service than a makeup class. Basically, put her videos on a big screen tv, throw in a few generic legal templates, and some random stories from Kandee's blog, and that is what my $495 paid for. She had mentioned that we would be certified Makeup Artists after the class, but I have since found that a certificate from Kandee Johnson has gotten me no where in the makeup industry. I ended up attending a school, and the professionals there actually have no idea who Kandee Johnson is. She promised several times on her website, on her blog, and during the seminar, that our career as a Makeup Artist will be launched and we will become highly sought after in the business. Sadly, I have yet to ever receive any recognition for being a Glaminar-certified makeup artist. I've even been laughed at, before. Beyond the internet, Kandee is a nobody in the makeup world. This whole seminar ended up being a glorified meet and greet with very little information given. I've expressed my concerns to Kandee, herself, and she returned my emails telling me that I was "ungrateful" and "whiny" as well as threw in a very lengthy story about a blind girl that had attended her Glaminar that told her Kandee changed her life. After I responded letting her know that I am very dissatisfied and will be taking this manner in another direction, I received no response. I contacted her multiple times on multiple mediums since and have yet to get a reply. I have gone through the motions of disputing the matter in PayPal, as well as contacted a lawyer, as Kandee showed no intent in helping me get some satisfaction in this matter. I strongly urge everyone that is dissatisfied like I was to attempt to either contact Kandee and hope that she responds better, or take the issue up with PayPal and a lawyer in your area. She says that she will not continue to do Glaminars, but I'm writing this to make sure that if she does, people know what your $500 is going towards. |
