I have a mobile business using a truck for sales and delivery of product. Mechanical failure caused the engine to need replacing. I preplanned for the downtime by locating what I thought was a good used engine from a reputable company, RJ Performance. My mechanic and I reviewed the data and pictures we received concerning the engine and decided to buy it. I contacted Jonathon Campbell at RJ Performance to tell him to ship the engine. He said he would get a quote for shipping and get me a total price. I was to send the money directly to him via FedEx and upon receiving the check he would have "his warehouse" ship it out. I complied. Time was running out according to my plan but no engine. I continued to call Campbell urging him to send the engine. He kept telling me it was shipped but wasn't sure what was going on. Eventually my engine failed completely and I had to take it to the mechanic. My plan was to spend a few days with my son while the truck was being repaired. I went ahead with the plan. That Friday I got a call that the engine was in so I called the mechanic. In the meantime the driver of the freight truck delivering the engine called me and asked if I new I was getting a used engine. I told him yes, thinking that he expected a new unit in crate. The following morning about 5:00 am my mechanic called telling me he had some bad news. The engine had a broken oil pan and busted accessories and that the crankcase area, rods, crank, etc was badly rusted. The engine wouldn't even turn over by hand one revolution. I immediately called RJ Performance. I was told by Campbell that a replacement would be shipped out that day from "his warehouse". Days go by. I'm out of business without a truck and no replacement engine. I am calling continuously trying to get the issue resolved. No success. Weeks go by. Finally, out of desperation I look elsewhere. I find an engine is the Ogden, UT area and elect to drive there and get it. I bring it home, install it and am back in business. Now I am trying to get a refund from Campbell/RJ Performance. I was first told that as soon as there was a bill of lading for the return of the bad engine they would refund. Then it became when they received the engine. I finally get a copy of the bill of lading only to find that the engine is being return to another vendor in New York that is NOT associated with RJ Performance. I track the location of the engine through 3 different carriers only to find that the selling vendor will not accept delivery. I call the selling vendor. Their first question of me is "why are you calling us"? I explained my situation. The gentleman told me he sold the engine to RJ Performance "as is, no returns". He asked what I paid for the engine. I told him, then he told me he sold it for less than 1/2 of what I paid for a "good, low mileage engine". He also told me he had sold a couple of other engines to RJ Performance and had similar experiences and that he wouldn't do business with them again. Now Jonathon is always on the "other line" when I call and most recently the phones go to voice mail. You may have figured out---this RJ Performance is a broker, they DO NOT have a warehouse, they are liars, cheats and con artists. They'll tell you what you want to hear. I'm still trying to recover some/all of my money. I am considering contacting an attorney and the Attorney General. |
