I filled out an application on www.handybs.com for part-time virtual assistant work from home. My Mom rec'd an email from this company based on her resume posting on either monster.com or careerbuilder.com. I have been a little concerned about losing my job, so figured I'd try this out as a back up plan or extra cash.
THIS IS A SCAM.
Of course I got hired.
My first task email:
Hi Jen,
You have recently applied for a part time position and sent your paperwork. Congratulations, you are hired! Read this letter carefully. You will find your EMPLOYMENT CONFIRMATION, YOUR FIRST TASK (attached) and INSTRUCTIONS on how to proceed.
As you know, your work begins with a 15-day test period (or 30 work hours if more tasks). As per the contract and the employment confirmation, your compensation is paid only at the end of this period. An official date of beginning is when you confirm by mail everything is clear and you start working on it.
1) Open your first task (attached) and study all details carefully. Make sure everything is clear.
2) If you have some questions - please address by email and you will get response in the next 24 hours. As your manager, I also have 30-50 people plus you per day. So I hope you understand if I do not respond immediately. However, before sending your questions, study your task details carefully.
3) During you trial period you will be receiving all the tasks directly from your HR manager. If you have some questions about the work in general (pay, communication etc.) – please make sure to study FAQ on the website first.
4) When working on the task, please specify how much time it took you. But do not spend more than 8 hours on this assignment.
5) We expect you finish and send your report in 2 days from now. You may send it earlier of course. If for some reason you cannot finish your report on time - specify when exactly it will be completed. We count on your responsibility.
6) Confirm this email has been received and REPORT OT START.
I wish to you good luck with the first task our part time employee. If you have some questions about the work and you cannot find the answers on the site, send them by e-mail.

The task was to find a French translator in my area - I needed to find 5 vendors that provide translation service for business meetings and some daily tasks for 1 week. When I spoke to one vendor, he told me that I was the 5th request he rec'd for the same thing...and he had 3 people on hold asking for the same information. That should have been my first clue. I completed the task, provided JORDAN MASTAGNI a word doc with the info. And I got this email back from him:
Hi Jen,
Your report has been received. After a closer look I believe you’ve done a great job! Everything looks fine. I have already forwarded it to the client. So you may consider this task completed unless we receive comments from the client.
There will be another task for you. I will send it by email within couple hours today or tomorrow. You have a great day!

I should have known this was a SCAM since the grammar/English is BAD.
THEN I rec'd this next task (SAME EXACT TASK my Mom rec'd)
Hi Jen,
There is something new for you. Given assignment is has no specific deadline. It’s ASAP. 1-2 days.
Our client has purchased something in Europe. Unfortunately, this exclusive gift has been broken. It was a gift for their business partner so now they are looking for replacement ASAP! Our client feels nervous about this situation as they are meeting with partners soon (next month) and they need replacement ASAP.
Your task is to assist with finding and replacing this item. You will find all contact information in the Attachment (email and website address).

I did not move forward on this task as I knew it was a SCAM at this point. And I rec'd this email:
Hi Jen,
Please give me a status update on the art task. Our client is interested in getting replacement.
My not emailing you every day does not mean you have nothing to do. I sent you all contacts of the vendor (email, website). Make sure to finish the art project ASAP, your trial period will be finished soon by the way.

I responded saying this was a SCAM and I was reporting the company to the BBB. And I got this email:
Hi Jen,
How are you? I tried calling you few times but no luck.
1) Make sure you are available to take my call or return my call asap.
2) Not always you see the same incoming phone number, when I am calling from my desk or a personal number. If you are not used to answer unknown callers – you have to. This job has only few requirements – one of these is to be available on the phone (be able to pick up the phone or return calls without delays).
3) If there is a better phone number – let me know asap. If you don’t use cell – buy one. That’s extremely important. I won’t be calling you often, but I want to make sure I can reach you when needed.
I truly hope you can resolve this problem during the next 24 hours. Because if no – we will not be able to continue working with you.

THEN I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM JORDAN.
He asked me if I had any questions on the task. I told him he was a criminal and he was totally scamming people and I already reported him to the authorities. he said (not paraphrasing):
Well thanks a lot and F&^% You.
He actually did not hang up right after that. He has an accent so I wasn't 100% sure I heard him correctly, so I said "excuse me" and he repeated himself TWICE.
I immediately hung.
DO NOT PROVIDE THIS MAN WITH ANY INFORMATION. I AM A BIT NERVOUS AS i FILLED OUT THE APPLICATION AND HE HAS MY CELL #, HOME #, HOME ADDRESS, WORK ADDRESS.
PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE OUT THERE. |

And then after he called me he then sent me this final email:

Our company is not willing to continue any future relations with you. If you believe there is a part of compensation owned to you – please send a snail mail to our company office (address is on the website). And please do not email me or call again, do not waste my time.

| I got the same thing, except I was a little naive because it seemed so professional and did the part with contacting the artist. They have a whole elaborate website set up for this artist. They wanted me to send him 10, 000 dollars through western union. now, they are called iluxin (iluxin.com) and let me tell you, they look 100% legitimate up until they email you and have terrible grammar. |
