I received a call from a telemarketer from US Office & Industrial Supply stating that our account had been inactive for a long period of time and that they wanted to send me their new catalog, and a free gift. She asked me if I would like to receive a headset radio or a leather organizer as a gift. I told her the organizer. She asked me what office items we use most frequently so that they can mark them in the catalog for me. I told her a couple items, and she suggested packing tape. I said yes, we use that too. She said that was great and that she needed to put me on hold for a confirmation number for the catalog shipment. Then a man gets on the phone and asks "So you use alot of packing tape there? Great, what size? The 2 inch?" I told him yes, generally. He says "Great! How about I send a couple of samples over? I figured they were just trying to give us a couple of incentives to make a big order when I received the catalog, so I said "Sure, that should be fine." He then hung up. Next thing I know, 2 big boxes show up. One with the catalog and an organizer, the other with 98 rolls of packing tape. I immediately call back and tell them that I did NOT order this and I want to send it back. "Laurie" then calls me back, asking what happened. She offers to let me keep the items at half price. I tell her no, that is unacceptable and she tells me a number to write on the box and to give it to UPS. She says she will issue a call tag. A week later I had to call her back, she hadn't issued the call tag, and I had received a bill for $382.08 for 98 half rolls of tape and $69.91 for handling, so a grand total of $451.99 for " a free catalog, a free gift, and a couple of samples" She issued the call tag and I am waiting now for the boxes to get back to them in California before I call and demand that they dismiss the $451.99 bill. |
