Golds Gym John Mahli Cancelled Membership now getting collection calls Santa Maria, California

In 2004 I signed a 2 yr contract to Golds Gym in Santa Maria California. It opened in 2005 and I did go there and worked out till I developed plantar facititis. I did not go as much but I always had hope. I lost my job in March of 2007 and I went into the gym on March 27 and cancelled my membership. I was told I had done it just in time for they were changing thier billing and it would have been harder to cancel. I was told then that it was too late for April billing already went through but that would be the last charge. In May I checked my credit card and saw that the regular gym charge did not go through at the scheduled time so I cancelled my credit card. In June I got a notice of late membership fees and I called the gym imediately. I didn't get a manager so I went in personally. I was told that no one was available and so I requested a copy of my paperwork for I no longer had it. I filled out more forms and never recieved any paperwork. I called several times trying to get this resolved and later got a call back from Mike Loos who informed me it was all taken care of and not to worry. One year later I recieved collection notice for the same Gym and I have gone in and talked with four different people and no one has been able to help me with this problem. No one has any paper work for the cancelled membership and I am still being hounded by a collection agency (different ones each time) and still can't get this monkey off my back. I filled out the paperwork in person I did as I was told to do to cancel and now they claim I owe 0ver $400.00! I don't know what to do. I can't afford to pay and it is not my debt. I havent used the gym and my 2yr contract was already up. what more am I to do?
