Cherie Travis, commissioner of Chicago Animal Control appointed by Richard M. Daley and long time friend of his wife Maggie Daley is not running a clean animal facility in Chicago. Volunteers complain that the animals are in environments that are not cleaned and kept in cages without exercise on a regular basis for months on end. Many volunteers are told to not attend to the animals because they are not a union employee of the city. In August of 2010 WGN did an expose of the conditions in the Chicago Animal Control facility and nothing has changed since. http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/steve-dale-pet-world/2010/08/chicago-animal-care-and-control-exposed.html Cherie Travis gave a brief interview to WGN along with a scheduled tour of the facility in cleaner condition than it normally is. What happens at Chicago Animal Control if you drop your pet off for adoption? Volunteers say that they keep the animal for a few days and then euthanize them. Animals being kept there awaiting court decisions are not let out of their cages on a regular basis and have even been put outside in the blistering heat (still in cages) when they become overcrowded. Litters of kittens are kept together in small cages that give them little room for movement. Their food and water dishes have litter in them and are not cleaned for extended periods of time. Why is Cherie Travis allowed to keep her position? Could it be that Maggie Daley is a friend of hers? It is time that animal rights activists stand up and spread the word about the injustice that these animals are suffering. Complain to the city of Chicago directly or let WGN know that you want to see a follow up story done. Chicago Animal Control 2741 S. Western Ave Chicago, IL 60608 312-747-1406
