build a bandit, fairview NC
regarding reputation
3rd of Nov, 2011 by seannieboy
After reading some of the complaints on this site, about 'Build a Bandit', I am inclined to respond. I was recently contracted as the painter for these vehicles out of the shop in Fairview, NC. I take pride in my craft, thus I am careful when choosing those with whom I associate my name. Having said this, I must insist that the people at Build a Bandit do, in fact, invest great concern in providing excellence of product to their clients. I am sure there have been some frustrations in schedueling and perhaps some dissatisfactions; but these machines require a terrific amount of patience and talent to make the client's hot rod dreams come to reality. Obviously there will be the occasional difficulty; these challenges do not however merit the accusations made in some previous statements here. In the end I hope the readers of these posts, especially those shopping for a 'Bandit' Trans Am, will take a look at the work I am turning out currently, and see that we will hand over a beautiful piece of American muscle car.
Thank you, Sean 'Spanky' Rathe

I think the problem lies that some people have given Bob and Erica $15, 000.00 to $20, 000.00 of their hard earned money and then have to wait over a year to potentially get their car. X amount of months go by and people panic, go online and see negative stuff and the whole thing snowballs into a bad situation.

Sean, glad I found this post! I had talked to Bob for over a year. I finally visited the Fairview shop in Oct and put my order in. The neg post did have me concerned. But knowing how online reviews work, I decided to do my own research and go to the source. That is why I visited the shop to meet Bob and Zak.

I can see how putting down your money and having to wait months for any thing can be frustrating. So I have been staying in touch with the shop. It would be nice if they can get on track with more updates and maybe a better way to show you the process from day one of your order. But it sounds like Bob is trying to get that going.

I look forward to gettin My 79 TA next year sometime! I hope to meet you down there someday.. Keep up the good work!

I ordered a '78 from Bob early last year. I paid the full price up front but, only after I visited the shops in person and talked face to face to Bob, Erica and the crew. Builds like this tend to take longer than the customer wants. My calls are always answered and emails are answered within a day or two. I have received photos of my car and it is to be complete within a few weeks. I have had no issues with these folks at all and look forward to driving my car home from Asheville to Texarkana.

Look – I will preface this by stating that I am not a customer of Build-A-Bandit / Classic Discount Automotive Restoration – I originally came across them on ebay about a year and a half ago. They post auctions for a “Professional” custom built 77-81 Trans Am. After “watching” a few auctions and seeing their 100% positive ebay feedback, I called them to inquire about having a 1979 Tran Am built for me.
I spoke with “Bob” and was given a price structure and time frame – Once I heard from him that the payment structure and timeline would result in them having all the money, basically upfront, did I back off and start to do some real research!
If you do a google search on Build-A-Bandit / Classic Discount Automotive Restoration in Fairview NC – you will find a bunch of complaints from angry people who have posted their experiences and frustration. Most of them have posted follow up postings stating that they were “taken care” of and are now happy. To me, this seems very funny – how can someone be so frustrated and angry enough to post online - and then basically retract the comments later? So I took it upon myself to research a little further. I directly contacted a few people who left positive feedback for them on ebay asking if they had any experiences (positive or negative).
The results of my research are scary! I emailed 5 ebay users who left positive feedback for Build-A-Bandit (ebay user: eck0211 ) 3 of 5 responded…. Of all 3 people I spoke with – NOBODY had gotten a vehicle!
The 1st guy told me how after sending them more money and then no response from them – that he flew there unannounced and wanted to see his car – he said he was shown his “supposed” car and it was scary, it had dirt in the paint from being painted out in an open shop with no paint booth and scary bad cars all over the place. He demanded, and was promised, a full refund… as of 2 weeks ago he was still waiting! His exact words in regard to doing business with them were: “RUN”
The 2nd guy was also promised a full refund after Build-A-Bandit asked for and missed several time extensions. He is still waiting.
The 3rd guy should have had his car 2 months ago … he was recently told that it should be ready by the first week in April.. we will see!
In summation, I would assume, based on everybody I’ve spoken with, that Build-A-Bandit is not to be trusted. I believe that they only promise refunds after frustrated “customers” come forward or post a negative comment online. That they promise refunds ONLY in exchange for removing or posting positive follow up comments. Think about it – You give them $10k - $20k and wait a year or so and then finally believe you will never get a car… they don’t answer your inquiries and you’ve left them positive feedback already. So you go to one of the numerous feedback sites and post your frustration – they see that and offer you a refund in exchange for posting a positive follow up. You don’t want to lose your money…. So you do so – only problem is that other people are left unaware of your experience AND I have yet to speak with ANYONE who has actually gotten a REFUND! – to quote one of their customers… RUN!

I wired a 50% deposit and have receipt of such dated 10/27/2011 from this company to have a Trans AM built with a start time told to me around 5-6 months. It is now nearly 8 months later, the car has not been started yet and nobody will answer the phone, return my call or send an email reply. I believe this "is" a scam or a poorly run business and plan to take legal action. Hopefully, they have some assets left. I work very hard for my money and this is JUST NOT RIGHT. Jeff, Ohio

Adamsadd is spot on with his observations! Even Joe Godar who is one of the posters here has had too wait longer than his quoted time to get a car that even he would say is less than he had hoped for.

I went to fairview after 18 months and many promises to pick up a car that was " according to Bob McElreath less than 2 weeks from being done" this is what I got http://www.allmusclecars.com/pontiacpros.html.

Now everytime Bob has posted one of his auctions on Ebay I post my car as a deterent. Bob has stopped his practice of selling 77-79 TA auctions. Now he sell cars that he shill bids( artificially runs the price up) only to retract some of the cars and contact the ebay bidder outside of Ebay to fleece them outside of Ebay.

Be very aware of his new location Swannanoa, NC and Ebay screen name 65classicrods.

Good luck with the car your getting on 1/30/13 Joe! I know you've earned more than your getting.
