My family and I purchased a female Kinkajou from Courtney Walker Cortina-Pineda at Simply Exotics on 12-3-10. We were told this female Kinkajou was healthy, had all necessary vaccines, preventatives and had been at her facility for several months where she was housed outside with her other Kinkajous. On arrival the Kinkajou was in a carrier, we were not invited to the facility but did ask if we could come. Courtney said she preferred to meet us somewhere and once we arrived at the meeting place she rushed us and offered no health certificate. We should have taken this as a red flag but we were so excited about our new addition and are not educated in the exotic animal trade. We were defiantly taken advantage of. When we got her home we immediately noticed she was thin and acted lethargic. We immediately took her to a knowledgeable exotic veterinarian where we found a long list of severe health problems. She tested positive for two parasites, had blood in her stool and had a severe bacterial infection and fleas. She had to stay at the vet and receive immediate fluids, antibiotics, wormer and had to be monitored closely for several weeks after that. She was dehydrated and under weight. Our exotic veterinarian told us that there was no way that this woman did not know this animal was sick. Especially with the years of experience she claimed to have with Kinkajous. Not only that but our Vet informed us that she had been suffering in this condition for a very long time. It was heart breaking this poor Kinkajou could barely pick up her head, wouldn't eat and for several weeks she was very ill. We almost lost her several times. Immediately after the first Vet visit we tried to contact Courtney several times left emails, voice mails and sent her a copy of the Vet. report. Once we finally got in touch with her she offered us no health guarantee, refund or reimbursement for our veterinary bills. When we asked her about the Kinkajous vaccinations and preventatives her story changed and she then said "She did not know what vaccines or preventatives Kinkajous required." Courtney then tried to shift the blame of the animals horrible condition by telling us that she purchased this female Kinkajou from S & S Exotics in Houston Texas. This meant that after purchasing this female Kinkajou from this mill/broker she then placed this animal in the same enclosures with her other Kinkajous as she told us she did. She did not screen this animal for any underlined medical problems and exposed all her other animals to these infections and parasites. This poor Kinkajou was at her facility in this condition for atleast 6 months and recieved no vet treatment. Courtney later after our posts flooded Facebook offered to take back the Kinkajou and give us back the money we paid for her. As you can imagine after all the money we spent in vet bills and time caring for her. There was no way we would ever have put her back in that horrible situation. Sine my postings I have also been contacted by several other individuals like myself who have also had similar experiences with Courtney at Simply Exotics. Also be aware that she runs another business by the name of Wild Things Zoofari. Courtney is only interested in the money these animals bring she can commonly be found brokering animals that she has little knowledge on. Please be very cautious in your search for exotic animal breeders. Dont let the license information and website fool you!
