I got a voicemail today (Thursday November 24th, 2011) from someone between 4 and 6pm who claimed that the phone call was a very important matter. I was given a case number and was told to call Mr. Carofello. at the 1-866 number he gave me and was told to refer to the case number when calling. When I checked the callers phone number using the function on my answering machine, it turned out to be an office in Concord. I returned the call and after giving him my date of birth and any 3 digits of my social insurance number, he said he was calling on behalf of realstar (which is the company I once rented an apartment through). He said to me that I have over $4000 in unpaid rent an damage costs, but he did not give me actual figures. I told him that my lawyer has settled things out with the head person of realstar and that I didn't have to pay anything. He said he doesn't have any documents proving that, and that he has a court order that he can initiate to deduct 35% off every pay. He also said that they are unable to take money from my ex that was living with me because she was on ODSP (Ontario disability funding) I'm beginning to believe that this is a scam because this phone call was made 6 months later than the time realstar sent papers to me to take me to tenant court (which was sometime in may or june). Those papers arrived after the lawyer settled my rent. Shouldn't I have my wages garnished starting in july if this action is real? Why would a big company wait months for money when they can grab it almost 2 months later? and why would this company only want 3 digits of a SIN number when there are 9? And the guy on the phone didn't even break down everything that I was supposedly responsible to repay. Like, how much is damages, how much is rent arrears? etc. And the part that ultimately makes me think that this is a hoax is that I have no documentation from anyone to prove to me that realstar is still trying to charge me even tho my lawyer settled it. |
