MDG Computers
MDG Computers Canada Inc. Does not give online quote, then call you to say product ready Oakville, Ontario

I found this site googling "Build your own computer Canada". I was looking for a "Dell" type of site where you can customize your order. The home page here looks a bit like Dell's. Here you can chose between Laptop, Desktop PC, etc. I chose Desktop PC and got to the next page. There are a dozen desktop computer models shown. Underneath each is a "price". Not total price, mind you, but a per-day payment "quote"(e.g. $0.99/ day). And not a clue as to "for how long". Beside each picture there is a red "+" button. If you click that you get a pop-up window with all the specs for the given system. (I mention this button to be fair, because on my initial visit, I did not notice it, and directly clicked the button underneath it.) You can then close this window or click the button in it labelled "Select". Under each picture there also is a button labelled "Select". Thinking this was like Dell or ncix.com, and I would then be given customization options, I clicked Select. Surprise! The next page is called "Online credit application". There are two fields: the first is "Your personal information", i.e. Name, Address, Time you have been at that address (!!!), Email, Date of birth, and... Social Insurance Number!. And here they add, beside the box to enter it, "For best possible rate"(!!!). I did not enter it. The second field is called "Your employment & financial information", i.e. Monthly Income, Source of Income, Additional Income and Living Arrangement (Rent, Own, etc.) On the right is a box that says "Applying for", with the picture and name of the system selected. At the bottom there is a line that says "I have read and agree to the Terms of Use". These are all about authorizing the Company to get credit information on you from credit reporting agencies. I must admit I may be a bit naive - I filled out the info accurately and, thinking I would get, if not customization options, at least a complete quote for the system so I would know how much they sold it for, I clicked the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. Surprise again! The next screen said: "Congratulations [My Name]! You have been approved for a $2,500 credit limit.
Your product: General Application
Your reference ID Number: 1234567" Below that was a big red button labelled "Finalize your order online". I NEVER pressed that button, not wanting to further a process that was already getting out of hand. Underneath that was the following info: Your assigned MDG sales representative: [His Name]
Tel: 1-800-665-8505 ext. xxx | Email: [his email]
Working hours: 12:30pm to 9:00pm (Eastern) Underneath that were three big buttons: Print page
Track your order (!!!)
"Like" MDG on Facebook I could not believe it! The site never gave me a final quote, I never pressed the "Finalize your order" button, and there it was saying "Track your order". The next thing I did was send the Sales rep an email, with my reference number, saying that I was not giving credit card info until I got a decent quote from them, stating total price, for the selected product. Well, he NEVER replied. INSTEAD, one week later I got a phone call from guess who? "Hello Mr MyName, this is MDG calling, your Motorola Tablet is ready!" (It was not my assigned Sales Rep, it was someone from the warehouse) At first I was confused, because, for one thing I did not remember the company's name (he did not not say MDG Canada Computers, just "MDG"), and, also, a Motorola Tablet (PC) meant nothing to me, since I had selected, on the site, a desktop PC. So I said it must be mistake. But then he gave my address and said, remember, you have been accepted for a $2,500 credit limit. That refreshed my memory indeed. I was mad. And I was afraid. Afraid I had pressed one button too much and was going to have to go through tedious legal stuff to cancel what I had unwittingly done, so I would not have to buy the darn thing. So I said I remember now but I never shopped your site for a Tablet PC, it was a desktop PC I selected. And I added I had written to get a quote and never got a reply. He ignored that and he said no problem, we have desktop PC's and I can answer all your questions. I just replied I had found what I needed elsewhere and I was not going to buy from MDG. Well, he did let it go at that and said OK and that was the end of the call. That's my story. I don't think I'll hear from them again. Anyone who reads this, just be warned!
