Two well dressed men in late teen/early 20's knocked on the door and said they were raising money to send their championship soccer team to England for the Arsenal Cup tournament. But they were raising money by selling magazine subscriptions. And since people have e-books now, their magazine subscription would go to Disabled Veterans in Veterans Hospitals. They showed a list of applicable Veterans Hospitals. Then, they asked for $120 to cover two veterans. When I said that was too much, they said they could give me a student discount and only needed $94. They had a clever line of conversation, saying they were children of neighbors and mentioned a couple of family names, which I didn't know. One of them said he was entering the Marines in several weeks. When I got a receipt for my "donation" I saw the company name, Marquis Fulfillment Agency. I checked with Google and got a Ripoff Report for Chino Hills, CA, several months ago. Very similar routine of dialogue. They never had me select a magazine, or select a Veterans Hospital. They just disappeared! I cancelled my check and called the local Crime Busters hot line to report the "scamers". In the cold light of the next morning I guess they didn't break any laws -- just misrepresented their cause and took a Retired Senior for $94. The receipt from Marquis Fulfillment Agency LLC allowed for written cancellation of agreements. I sent off a Notice of Cancellation at the Post Office, with delivery confirmation -- another $5.65 cost.
