My fiance found himself seeking legal help concerning a matter with his ex. They were married in 1992 & separated without any children in 2000. My fiance tried on numerous occasions throughout the years to divorce his ex without success. She would never show up to court hearings & the judge would wind up throwing the case out. It shows on file 3 times where he has done this. Apparently his ex attempted to get food stamp benefits earlier this year & was denied because she is still legally married. LMBO! Anyways, my fiance then received a notice in the mail regarding his "child" that his ex has & that he would have to pay child support. A bit of background here... My fiance is Caucasian. His ex is African American. Her child is half Hispanic & half African American. The child's name is even Hispanic. He was born in 2004 & my fiance was legally separated from his ex in 2000. He can show where he filed for his taxes that year alone. Anyway, sounds pretty cut & dry right?! He was referred to the Women's Law Center by a friend of mine. Thanks a lot for this "top-notch" referral, by the way! Earlier this year we paid $300.00 as a retainer & Lisa Schemmer was assigned to his case. A huge indicator of this whole ordeal should have been that every time my fiance would attempt to reach Lisa Schemmer it would take her several days to even acknowledge his call. Very poor communication! He only met with her once to discuss his case & once to pay the retainer. In July we were finally mailed court documents. There were instructions for my fiance to have these documents signed & notarized. We would also have to produce an additional $250.00 to cover the process server fees. We would then have to mail the signed & notarized documents back to her or hand deliver them to her office. That was the last communication we received from her. My fiance travels out of state for his job. Finances are strained right now & we do have 2 children to take care of. Keep in mind, that there was no deadline on this paperwork stating when it would have to be returned to her. She never called to inquire & that was that. He did attempt to reach her several times without success. We intended on giving the $250.00 & the court documents to Lisa Schemmer in the middle of this month (September). At the beginning of this month (September) I went to check our postal box & found a letter in it from Lisa Schemmer. It was a snarky, snotty, highly unprofessional letter informing my fiance that she would no longer be handling his case & that he needed to find legal help somewhere else. She had only made the documents that she had mailed to him to be signed & notarized. Other than that, she made a 10 minute telephone call. My fiance should have gotten a partial refund of his retainer because at the beginning she informed us that this would be enough money to cover him throughout his entire case. Now my fiance is left without an attorney & if we do not get this matter resolved he will have to unwillingly pay child support on a child not belonging to him. His "real" children will suffer in turn. Thanks a lot, Lisa Schemmer! You suck a$$! I would NEVER recommend Lisa Schemmer or the Women's Law Center to anyone wishing to have their legal matters resolved!!! By the way, is this a common issue with attorneys because his sister had a very similar situation in which her attorney was paid & then split?!
