This report is in regards to the collection practices exhibited by Lieberman Management Services Inc. This company is in the business of representing, advising and managing condominium associations and homeowner associations in the Chicago area. They have managed a condominium association in which I own a property for over 5 years. In that time I have watched as expenses have skyrocketed, assessments have rapidly increased and service has declined. Nonetheless I have always paid my assessment timely and remained a homeowner in this community for over 10 years.
Like many people I have a mortgage that is greater than the value of my home due to the current economy; I have continue paying my mortgage and supporting this particular condominium association despite this because I try to honor my obligations. In the summer of 2010 two of my close family members were diagnosed with cancer (one with kidney cancer and the other with Stage 3 Lymphoma). While trying to assist my family members with their treatments and recovery I fell behind on my assessments by about $1,000. This occurred over a 5 month period. By December 2010 (less than 5 full months after I started falling behind) I had begun making payments again to bring my account current. As of February 1 2011 I owe this association less than $500.
This company proceeded to retain a lawyer rather than trying to communicate by mail or phone. They continued to cash my payments even though they were attempting to take me to court over the unpaid assessments. I don't think anyone should be at risk of losing their home over unpaid assessments of such a small amount. This company is over-zealous and has no desire to communicate or resolve problems like an unpaid assessment balance. They do not even send monthly statements reflecting payments/charges to your account. They would much rather spend the association's money on needless legal fees so they can take the homes of hardworking homeowners. I have watched this management company behave in a similar fashion with other homeowners in the community and it is time someone speak out. If it is happening here it must be happening in other communities managed by this company.
People need to know that Lieberman Management Services Inc is not in the business of serving the homeowner's they represent. They would much rather foreclose on your property for something as insignificant as $1,000 in unpaid assessments. This is not a proper way to do business. They are the equivalent of thieves!
