I shared joint account with my mother at Lakeside bank. She passed away in April. She also received Social Security check that was automatically deposited in this account. A few days after I buried my mom. I informed social security of her passing. They did not state the monthly deposit had to be returned. In May I told the bank I would like to close account and showed the death certificate and told them I informed Social Security. First, they said you must wait a whole month before closing account to make sure she had not outstanding debts, etc. I said okay, I wil come back in 30 days. I came back on a Saturday and they said, we can't close the account until we are authorized by the bookkeeping department. The bank officer said to come back again and we will fix everything then. I wanted until 2nd week in June to try again. They said you can not close the account because it is the weekend and the main branch is closed. Come back on a weekday. I said, I can't because I live and work in the suburbs. They also said they will probably send back your mom's Social Security deposit, $536.00. I told them it was deposited before she died and found out it was for March. She was entitled to the money. I wrote an e-mail to Lakeside bank and explained the situation and I demanded to close the account. To make a long story short, the finally allowed me to close the account but still would send the money back to Social Security. Social Security said the bank should not have returned the money. Now I must fill out a form and wait several weeks to get the money back since as her estate, I am entitled to it. Lakeside Bank is did it even when they know it was wrong. Other officers, the person in the bookkeeping department all did nothing. I even said, if you are wrong will you apologize or get the money back. No response is there answer. |
