After trying to negotiate a fee for a lab rescue for a dog named Dakota from labs4rescue, CT I was insulted and accused of being a "dog killer" because I thought the fee was high, given the average time a dog spends in this facility and the sometimes acute medical problems associated with some of the dogs. Personally, I do not sense the request for a reduction in the fees or the application fee is unreasonable and should never be responded too in the manner it was. Here is the comment from the Director, Cathy: "I am going to assume you were just clueless to the issues surrounding rescue, when you asked that the fee be waived. I would now expect that having been educated in this process, that you would be more than enthusiastic to pay an adoption fee to enable us to save more labs! Each adoption fee paid, allows us to save labs. Someone who doesn't pay a fee, is in actuality, causing labs to die". I also think the fees are discriminatory, in that they are egregiously high and most low-income people cannot afford the fee, as they call it, and absorb the cost of medical care. Some will disagree with this, but the fee puts the adoption out of reach for many low-income families that would be great care-givers to these pets. Rescues should not only be for the higher-income folks, as it unfair not only to society, but the dogs.
