Clay County issued arrest warrants for Konstantinos Afthinos and Pasquale
Gervasio, both listed owners of the Total Medical Express on Blanding
Boulevard, and a Clay County lieutenant traveled to Palm Beach County to
assist.
The arrests came as part of "Operation Blue Spoon," which targeted
pain clinic owners, doctors and pharmacists from Palm Beach and Broward
counties.
Both men were charged with operating an unregistered pain clinic.
Afthinos was booked into the Palm Beach County jail, and Gervasio was
brought to the Broward County jail. They are being held in lieu of
$250,000 bail, said public information officer Mary Justino.
The clinic was shut down in March after authorities closed it for operating without a pain clinic license. Two doctors from the clinic were charged in May
for operating a pain clinic without a license. The criminal charges
were possible because of a law passed last year that strengthened
penalties for pain-management clinics and made it a felony to operate a
pain clinic without a license, said Clay County Sheriff's Office Lt.
Barry Abramowitz.
"The North Florida region has taken an aggressive stand," Abramowitz said. "I think we've done as well as we could."
