International Living.com IL Omitted critical information, incomplete information, false information promoted Internet

IL excludes certain country's facts that could be deemed negative in reports and thus misleads the reader/subscriber. This is done blatantly, as IL reports on many countries and the same information is not presented on each country. And miraculously, when the information is negative for a country, it is simply not addressed. And in some cases, is presented incorrectly. The errors I speak of relate to the cost of vehicle ownership in Costa Rica.

For example, to import my 11 year old car worth 5k in the US, the taxes in CR are a little over 5k dollars US. NOWHERE in the IL products they sell is any information even eluding to this fact. The one comment they make says it basically costs a percent or two to transfer a vehicle. This in in contrast to their report on Panama, for example, where they say you can import a car every two years with a tax exemption.

Another example is an article they publish about a US couple who were denied medical care in the US. They state Medicare "denied" a surgical procedure for the husband because of his age. I worked in medicine for two decades and have never heard of MEDICARE denying a needed procedure based on someones age. Maybe an insurance company they signed up with that is NOT Medicare but receives funding from Medicare could have denied the procedure, but again, I would be shocked if it was due to "age". This story is possible in a socialized medicine country, but not in the US at the present time.

My recommendation is read IL products as entertainment, not facts. Too many omissions and misleading stories to use their products as facts and to base important decisions upon.

Oh my!! Sounds like you expect IL to do your homework for you!! IL is a for-profit magazine, and probably expect you to do your own checking -- esp about something this life changing and expensive.

And, yes, Medicare does deny some treatments for the elderly based on age, current health, ability to recover from the treatment, etc.. Here, in Arizona, they have stopped many transplant surgeries for even the young due to the costs. Life in the US has changed a lot in the last 5 years, thanks to the Wall Street idiots and those who put the US in debt. Sometimes, it does require going offshore for medical attention -- dental work is far cheaper in Mexico than here, and in many cases, just as good. I live in Tucson, and my dentist is in Mexico. My local dentist wanted $500 to remove my son's wisdom teeth. My neighbor sent me to hers, and it was only $120. Same process, with excellent aftercare including a phone call 2 days later to make sure he was doing well. Don't let your personal experience say that all lives are just like yours!! Too bad you blame others based on your personal expectations!

"When you bring a car to Costa Rica by any means, driving, shipping it, etc. you are charged import duties. HUGE import duties. The import duty on a used car here runs from 45% to 70% of THE RETAIL VALUE of that car! That is NOT the Blue book, Black book or any other color book. It is the "Costa Rica book", and it is not cheap. To be clear, that is BOOK price, NOT the price you paid for it in your home country.

On a $20, 000 used car, that's from $10, 000 to $14, 000 in duties depending on the age of the car!. Newer cars actually have MORE duty and older cars have less... older meaning maybe ten years old. Also, just to be clear... if you own it (it is titled), it is a used car.

Next, add about $500.00 to $800.00 for freight charges to have it shipped from the US to Puerto Limon where you will pick it up.

Finally, once it is here, you will still need to have it inspected, pay your Marchamo, and insurance. Ugh! With those costs, you better REALLY be in love with the old wagon."

This took me less than 60 seconds to find with Google!!
