No need to reiterate what dozens of others have reported both here and on other sites. Just Google Denise Kleiber, Hampton Danes, Kleiber Kanines, or any variation and you will likely find complaints that are all very similar. Story goes like this...you will find a puppy via petfinder, nextdaypets, classifieds, etc and email the owner. You will be in contact with a woman named Kait Steffen via email - her daughter. Everything will seem fine, you will make a deposit, you will go to pick up the dog and suddenly you will be dealing with Denise Kleiber. She will give you some health guarantee and then tell you the AKC papers will have to be mailed and provide an excuse along the lines of: - I've been out of town and haven't been able to get everything organized - there was a mix-up with the AKC and they are resending out paperwork - my computer broke, my check to the AKC was lost in the mail, my husband mixed up some papers, etc. The AKC warns of this very behavior and that you shouldn't take possession of the puppy without papers in hand, but I learned this after the fact. Denise knows that once you see your puppy there is no way you are leaving without him/her and that is the beauty of the scam. Either way - she will hand write some vaccination info on an index card, write a note on the health guarantee saying you will get the AKC papers in 2 weeks or so and you will happily take your pup home. After a couple weeks you will realize you haven't heard a peep and then the fun begins. Emails will go unanswered, or answered with more excuses (believe me between what I've heard and what I've read of other's experiences the excuses must be hard to keep track of). Eventually you will either forget about them or give up because you love your pup and what can you do? If you try to follow-up with the vet that she noted on the vaccine card you will find out that they have no record of seeing a litter of pups let alone administered vaccinations. If you question her, she will likely tell you that she administered the vaccines herself and the vet only did a wellness check...but doesn't explain the lack of records of that visit taking place. I'm sure if you needed to make a claim on that health guarantee you won't get far. All in all, I love my puppy. I really do. But if I were to pay market value for a non-AKC registered puppy it would have been far less than what I paid. If you browse her many ads, under many names, selling everything from Great Danes to French Bulldogs to Brussels Griffon to Boxers, on many sites, using multiple email addresses you will notice that the prices vary from $900-$1600 with no real reason - she will claim championship bloodlines, AKC registered, her website (one of many) will boast of her AKC affiliation. Don't buy the story. I wish I had done better research before I was ripped off. |
