Both my mother and I, have shopped at goodwill for numerous years now, and lately the past few years many larger cities have developed a really outragious price inflation on all items, encluding those that belong in the trash. This one store inpaticular in humble texas began to tell me this one barbie doll house that wasnt even complete was going for major bucks on ebay and other collectors would pay really big bucks for it. Ive been a toy collector now for many years, my mother whom is an antique dealer for 30+ years, also knows what she is doing has taught me for years and ive learned from her. The toy in question i was buying is the vintage barbie dream house center peice which was sold seperately back in 1980s. this toy found in goodwill had major cracks missing peices and basically things you couldnt replace unless finding the peices on ebay or other thrift stores.(that time is very time consuming and also expensive to do.) this one lady came up to me practically telling me to buy this peice, i told her i didnt mean to offend her but this wasnt worth the price they wanted for it. which was 20.00, and by the way i had seen this exact same doll house the week or so before in the same exact goodwill going for 15.00, i asked her why the price increase. She said to her knowledge that it had always been this price. i told her if they wanted to really sell this, to price it at 9.99. no more than that because its basic doll house parts they can sell it for. she looked at me like i was nutts! i told her that just because people on ebay buy these houses for insain prices, doesnt mean they to will gain these sort of buyers for items that arent even near good conditions. if they had a doll house that was in near good condition sure, sell it for prices close to ebay. However this thrift store isnt ebay, nor an auction store. it is just that a thrift store, thrift meaning buying cheap. so, my advice to buyers is do your homework before going into any goodwill. or, if you would buy it at the inflated cost to help goodwill buy it. goodwill, you have lost my mother, myself, and her hundreds of other antique dealer friends and their friends, to not shop at goodwill. let me reitterate something before i get a flaming message from goodwill about antique dealers and the reselling of items. Sure we buy and resell all antique dealers do, however they also restore many old toys, so its not like they buy from you and then just turn and resell, lots of patience and time go into restoring old dolls, toys, furniture etc. I for one do not resell things, we look for specific items to collect, and display. Goodwill is no longer one of the stores you can actually buy for a good price. The inflated brand new prices on shirts and pants that you can buy in stores for the same price as brand new or cheaper when on sale, is rediculous! DO something about this, before the reputation of goodwill is soiled for good. Ive read some of the other comments by other goodwill employees about the overhead and store price to rent the place. you guys ever hear of tax breaks for non profit and charities? sounds as if you all should be taking into consideration that you do have options when it comes down to the tax credits you can claim on your end of the year taxes. Your employees arent paid anything more than minimum wage, i know this because my sister used to work for goodwill not many months ago. she too has seen price inflation, and has been trained by other employees that tell her, if this one item doesnt sell that very same day, they had planned to buy it and resell it on ebay.
