Generac Generators
defective rotor/stator
14th of Jul, 2011 by Joseph Long
Gerarac 12K aircooled installed 05/2005. Exercised 15 minutes per week. Service done by installer. Less than 100 hours run time. During recent outage it quit after 30 minutes run time. Restarted itself and after 5 second run time turned off. Did this 5 times then quit. Installer said it is rotor or stator and would cost about $1,000.00. Read online people with similar problems. Company should make good on 6 year old unit with less tan100 hours run time.Maybe time for class action suit.

Generac 15kw aircooled, model 4390-3, same thing happened to me during hurricane Irene. Genset shutdown and began the crank/shutdown cycle, then stopped with overcrank LED lit. Generator has always cooked batteries. On 4th one now. 3rd one exploded. Have contacted Generac, and they had the gall to say they knew of no problems with their units. Yet they have responded to several identical complaints via CPSC. I filed a complaint with CPSC, FTC, and the BBB. Suggest you do the same. Class action... perhaps.

Two issue here, one; overcrank would be caused by gas delivery (check gas pressure with manometer). Go to the demand regulator and check output gas wg" (small test fitting plug has to be removed and hose barb inserted to hook manometer up), o-ring on demand regulators stick sometimes when they sit for long periods (insert carefully a small screwdriver into the diaphragm vent holes and gently push and you will feel the valve open, if it is stuck you feel a small pop when it breaks free. Larger generators have a solenoid mounted on the input that energizes during running and cranking that also stick or solenoids go bad) Next check the choke plate, should cycle open/closed while cranking. Sometimes stick. Remove the air cleaner cover and watch it. If not moving while cranking it could be in a bind, move it by hand and see. Sometimes you have to slightly bend the leading edge up to avoid it sticking (likes to stick on venturi edge) Also the little solenoid that moves it go bad (if you have a multimeter you should be getting 6+ VDC cycling on/off to it while cranking, if not (0 vdc) the control board or wire is bad). If less that 6 VDC (but not 0 VDC)check your battery power while cranking, sometimes drops below 10 VDC and causes problems, replace or charge the battery and check the charger output (remove the + terminal from the battery and use multimeter to measure between + cable end {disconnected from battery} and a chassis ground should be about 13.5 VDC), if lower or higher you have a problem with the charger (trickle charger mounted in control panel area or in the transfer switch mounted to the wall of the home)That brings me to problem #2; exploded battery. Two faults can be found here first is defective charger putting out high voltage (I've seen as high as 26 VDC) that will ruin the battery. Second is low water level in battery. battery is allowed to gas into air space of missing water, power goes out, gen won't crank because charge level low, power comes on and charger energizes battery creating a spark and now you have an exploded battery and acid all over (seen it a few times..common lack of maintenance problem). Make sure you don't use maintenance free batteries...only use batteries that you can maintain water level on. Now having said all that I have found that Generac makes the best generators money can buy (no i don't work from Generac but I do work on generators) Almost always problem can be traced to lack of maintenance or improper installation. Not often do I find design or engineering problems (I have seen them but not often).

16kwatt generac backup NEVER HAS WORKED. They don't care .. gave us a list of 15 electricians took 9 of them before we got to one that was still doing work for them. All said they are too difficult to work with and they don't pay. Runs for 15 seconds then shuts of amd throws under voltage code. Have read a million blogs regarding this and other issues. One guy said the stator brushes are toned wrong and they need to fix that or itwill never work . They will not give money back or replace the unit. Cross in my book. Going to court soon if they don't take care of the problem.
