On November 5th at approx 3am myself and two friends got into flash cab #4602 at the intersection of California and Chicago Ave. The destination was 2624 W. Rice St, which is approx 4 block away. Upon arriving to the destination, the total fare for the ride was $5.52. One of my friends handed me $4 and my two friends got out of the cab, one of them was holding my purse. I remained inside the cab and was asking my friend to hand me my purse to get the rest of the money for the fare, at no time did I get out of the cab or attempt to get out of the cab. At that time the cab driver sped off going west on Rice St. which is a dead end. During this time he was yelling at me "you cannot get out of the cab without paying" I tried to explain to him that I had $4 in my hand and I was getting the rest from my purse that my friend was holding. After almost running into the dead end, the driver turned the cab around and drove at a high speed going east on Rice St. My friends tried to stop him by standing in the street and he just went faster and almost hit both of them. The driver continued to drive at high speed yelling at me and threatening to call the police. I kept explaining to him and showing him the $4 I had in my hand and that my purse was with my friends that he drove away from and that we were trying to pay him for the cab. I tried to calm him down which was not working and then I just got really scared because he was driving me away from my house and my friends and I had no idea where he was taking me. He was driving very fast, he turned north onto Rockwell, then east onto Augusta, then south onto Western, where he did an aggressive U-turn and pulled over on the east side of Western at the north side of the intersection of Western and Iowa. During this time driving, I was very upset and begging him to stop the car, but he continued to yell at me and then he closed the partition and called the police. During the time this all happened, my friends were scared for my safety because the driver basically was kidnapping me and they were calling the police as well. My friend also got his car and followed the cab. When the driver finally stopped I got out of the cab because I was terrified and my friend had arrived by that time. Soon the police came at which time I had my purse back so I paid the full fare. Then the cab driver told the police that my friend was pounding on his windows and he had my friend arrested. I am filing this complaint because this cab driver put my life and both of my friends lives in serious danger for no reason. We had every intent of paying the full fare, I did not getting out of the cab before I paid him and the entire time I had $4 in my hand, so he put my life in danger for $1.52, for which I intended to give him and I did give him once I got my purse back. I am thankful that noone was hurt, but someone could have been seriously hurt. A cab driver is supposed to provide a safe environment, not put people in danger and someone that demonstrates this type of insane behavior should not be paid to be responsible for other peoples lives. |
