I was offered a "free" 10-day trial membership at Extreme Fitness gym with a "no strings attached" guarantee. Upon registering, however, I was asked for my credit card information and told there would be a $60 (one month) charge on my account which would be refunded if I decided not to stay on. I admit this seemed strange, but thought nothing of it and continued on with the membership process. When I informed the sales rep that I didn't want to stay on after the 10 days were up he became argumentative; demanding justification for my decision. When I revealed that I had a similar offer from a gym across the street he became slanderous, even using the word "shitty" to describe their facilities. I then realized that the 10-day trial offer was a scam, and that it was only there as a means of luring people into the gym. After about 20 minutes of arguing with me he gave up and told me to "come back tomorrow and speak to the financial rep", which I did. After repeated visits and more arguing, the financial rep agreed to cancel my account under the condition that he couldn't give me a good deal if I decided to come back. I thought this was the end of it, until I got my credit card statement in the mail, that is. They never refunded my $60. I spoke to the financial rep a few times, but gave up after repeated promises that they did refund it. If you are offered a free 10-day membership from this gym do not accept it. |

I had signed my wife up for a membership at Extreme, since she is new to Canada and has already heard of other foreigners getting ripped off, etc. They gave the usual hard sell and pitch, to which I negotiated a monthly rate that seemed fair at the time. Made the initial first month's payment by debit, while they took down my credit card #, and they said when she comes to workout the first time, they will give her the membership card after their "FREE" assessment. Having no prior gym membership experience, I was very naive to not realize that this 'session' would be a HARD pitch to rope her into a personal training schedule. She held up well during this 'pitch' which consisted of letting her warm up on a bike for a few minutes, then immediately bringing her into a private office. The douche bag threw out all kinds of one liners such as "there are say-ers and there are do-ers - you are a say-er" etc... I should never have left her alone. At the end of it, she was so upset she didn't even want to go back and look at any of the staff again. So, since it was within the 10 days I went in person, cancelled on her behalf (since I had used my credit card). Now it's 4 months later and I still have not received a cheque for the refunded amount of the payment made for the first month. The manager who signed my cancellation no longer works there. Surprise surprise. Now I have been trying to track down the 'new' manager. I guess I should consider myself lucky I'm only down $60+, compared to many others who have been dragged through the mud, with unauthorized monthly withdrawals. I will still give it one last try for good measure, before I give up... |
