I have been called continually for the past year about a "law suit" that is/will be filed against me about a debt that I defrauded the company (they usually use Cashnet as the company). They want me to verify all my information and I refuse to. The callers always have indonisian type accents.
The phone numbers have come from area codes 805, 360, 971, 503, etc. now the numbers aren't even complete (the two I got today were from 970-177-881 and +0000). Its always the same script with a new twist here and there.
The caller says that I have committed fraud and he is going to read "your affidavit to you." If you allow him to, he will read all kinds of charges etc.
If asked for a case number, he will give you a number. I have learned to ask what court it is filed in, and the answer usually is "your local court" they cannot tell you because there is no law suit.
Officer John Harris told me today that I was going to be arrested if I didn't verify my information and then they would file the law suit against me. I asked for their address and phone number, he said I would learn that in "due time" I informed him that by law he had to provide that information to me upon request and that by law I did not have to verify anything to him until they mailed me proof of this debt. I told him that I work for attorneys and they know nothing of the laws in the United States. I hung up on him, he called my phone back 6 times in a row, I didn't answer, just shut my phone off.
In the past, the caller has told me that they would come to my work and made sure I got fired and then go to my house and made sure I would get evicted. (I have told them to come to my work, and let me know when so I could have my bosses waiting for him in the conference room...all 8 of the attorneys that I work for).
They have even called my 85 year old mother and threatened to throw her in jail if she didn't give them my social security number and phone number. My mother replied that she really could use the rest and asked what time they would pick her up....the guy hung up.
I have reported these people to the Oregon Attorney General but have not heard anything from them at all.
I do know that if you (a) ask to speak with someone who speaks English; (b) start laughing at them; (c) tell them you want to get a tape recorder and have them repeat their name, company, address and phone number; or (d) start barking like a rapid dog into the phone..... they will usually hang up and not call back for a few days.
