Crystal Pierz Marine
Crystal Pierz Marine Boat Repair completely misdiagnosed Shakopee, Minnesota
8th of Jan, 2011 by User574086
I brought my boat into Crystal Pierz Marine on April 27th because the power was going in and out, it would sometimes go 18 mph then sometimes up to 26 mph at full throttle (26 - 28 mph is average for my boat). I brought it in to have it diagnosed to see what the problem was. They found that the switch box was bad and they replaced it, they also did the lower unit drain gasket on the lower unit and changed the lube at my request. They stated they did a compression check and a 34 point inspection. Total cost was $437.67. I didn't have the opportunity to use my boat until July 4th weekend and when I ran the boat it would not plane and would only go 17 mph. I brought the boat back to Crystal Pierz on July 12th and explained what the problem was and ended up leaving the boat there. I picked up the boat again on July 14th and they stated they ran it on a dyno and verified spark and timing and I was told that my boat runs fine. Took the boat out again (about 4-5 days later) and the boat would still not plane and rpms of the engine were low while in gear but would rev up in neutral. Boat still would not go over 18 mph. Engine would never rev out into full speed while in gear. That day the impeller went out so I shut the engine off immediately and got towed back to the landing. I brought the boat back to Crystal Pierz on July 22nd and explained that I was still having problems with speed & rpm and & boat would not plane. I had the impeller repaired and had the boat lake tested by them. That repair was $232.84. They could not get it to go over 18 mph either and stated that my crank case halfs and seal under the fly wheel were leaking. Picked up the boat August 2nd and was told my boat may last an hour. I took the boat out again on August 16th for the third time and the boat would not run at all. It would barely start, which I have never had problems starting it before, and once it did start it would run only a few minutes and die at low speed. If you put the throttle down at all it would die instantly. Why wasn't I told this the first or second time I brought the boat in after spending all this money when the last diagnosis should have been figured out during the first or even second diagnosis? They initially stated the compression was good which should have caught the crank case and seal leaking. The engine should have been put under 120 lb psi and it would have been caught during the original "inspection" and was not diagnosed properly the first or second time. They stated they also did a leak down but is not stated in any of my paperwork. Every time I went in to pick up my boat and asked questions they came up with a lot of excuses that didn't make sense. I seriously think they damaged my engine during the first repair and then came up with a lot of excuses to get out of being responsible. Now I have $670.00 into repairs for a boat that at least ran when I brought it to them and got back a boat that does not work at all.

Update 1/1/11:

I brought my boat into Supreme Marine in November to have the boat diagnosed to see if what Crystal Pierz stated about the halfs and crank seal was a correct diagnosis and was told the only reason my boat was not running properly was because the exhaust was clogged. It took them 5 minutes to diagnose the problem and within three hours they had my engine fixed and I was back on the water and the boat running properly and they didn?t even charge me for a diagnostic due to the simplicity of the problem. The whole problem was solved for $240 vs. the $700 CP has already charged me and stated they still could not fix it without spending another $1800! CP had the boat three times and still were unable to correctly diagnose a very simple problem. They stated on one of the first invoices that the boat was hesitating because the switch box was bad, which was not even close to being the problem and I was charged $219.00 and $89.25 in labor for that. I did some searching on line just by typing in engine hesitating and the first four articles stated check for clogged exhaust, I can figure this out and I'm not a mechanic but CP can?t? CP stated that the engine had overheated, I read that a clogged exhaust would cause overheating. And then charged me a fortune on top it and STILL couldn't fix it??? CP stated the halfs were leaking and crank seal under the flywheel was leaking, which AGAIN, was MISDIAGNOSED since they were not cracked or leaking per inspection at Supreme Marine.
