I live in Brewster NY, the only terrestrial cable provider in my area is Comcast. This is my first problem, Comcast has a monopoly on terrestrial cable TV in my area. I recently moved and became a customer of Comcast. It was an easy decision to go with Comcast because they are the only choice I have and I like to watch TV. I scheduled an install and chose their 139.99 "bundle" package, which I was told would increase to 160$ after three years and then would never go up. OK not too bad for Cable, Internet and phone. The cable guy came on the 9th of November and installed everything in an hour or so and he gave me a piece of paper to sign whereby I agreed to pay Comcast 20$ for total installation charges and equiptment. I still have this paper. Fast forward to Dec 7th. I still had not received a bill and was starting to worry. So I called up Comcast and to my dismay, having used these services for less than a month, was told I owe Comcast 448 dollars and change. Needless to say I was in shock. I am a Special Ed. teacher in New York's inner city. I could not afford this bill, especially when I was not even warned it was coming. I had no way of preparing because I was not told that I have to pay a month in advance or I had to pay over 100$ for installation fees. These fees are ridiculous. I live in a condo and the man who sold us the condo also had Comcast. I was charged for activation fees? 29.99? All the outlets and wiring were there already. The Comcast rep named off other charges that I was never informed of either. I then spent over an hour and a half trying to straighten this out as I initially thought there must be a mistake. How can I be billed for something I was never told about I said. I still don't see how this is legal. But Comcast reps would not budge. I guess America's largest cable provider needs every penny they can get. (That was sarcasm) I couldn't help think that if Comcast didn't have a monopoly on terrestrial cable they would then care if I was a happy customer or not. If there was even one other Cable provider in Brewster Comcast may worry I would take my business elsewhere. But I can't not if I want terrestrial cable. How does a company get away with A) having a monopoly and B)resorting to lying and misleading tactics. I also couldn't help think they are haggling over 100 dollars when I will pay them 157$ a month, and oh yes that the real price when they sneak in hidden fees to the 139.99 introductory price, for the rest of my life. All this in time for the Holidays, Thank You Comcast. Merry Christmas to you too. (more sarcasm). |
