CCS Contracting Ltd. is a company that was recommended by a general contractor friend of mine last year.(2010) My mothers revenue property in St Albert, Alberta required an inspection along with a quotation for minor maintenance since the roof was only 7 years old. I asked the gentleman on the phone what the minimum charge would be for conducting an inspection he said free of charge. I said great, please proceed to come by the next day and conduct an inspection on the roof. CCS sent a gentleman by to conduct an inspection the following day. Our appointment was for 10:00AM and he did not arrive until 10:36AM with no phone call to let us know that he was running behind. I had already taken the time off of work to be there to let him in the building so he could access the roof hatch in the mechanical room. After he conducted his inspection he had mentioned that a report would be generated from his office and it should take no longer than a week. Two weeks went by without seeing any report, the only thing we did receive was an invoice for $486.00 for the roof inspection. I quickly got CCS on the phone to see what was going on and was directed to their General Manager Martin MacLean. Martin explained to us that all hours are billable hours when a tradesperson is dispatched to a job. I said to Martin that we were told that the initial inspection was free of charge. His immediate response was that the person I spoke to was new and was mistaken about the processes of conducting a roof inspection for maintenance purposes. I could not believe that we were expected to pay a fee for something we were told was for free because their was more than likely to be a follow up visit to make actual repairs to the roof based on their findings anyhow. Why is a multi million dollar company allowed to bully its way through society when honest hard working Canadians have to play by the rules to make a living? While doing some homework on this company after they ripped off my elderly mother for $486.00 I recently uncovered this article from the Edmonton Journal. (Below) Which raises this question; If they would blatantly attempt to cheat the Canadian Government out of $207,178.00 than what would stop them from cheating the average joe out of some hard earned dough? Are there any honest contractors out there? Local roofing company fined for tax evasion EDMONTON - A local roofing company has been fined $45,678 for tax evasion.
