On Friday, Oct. 22nd, a salesperson by the name of Kevin came to my door. He was from Atlantic Beef Co.He showed me a paper with a list of different meat packages I could buy. He told me this was not a contract or agreement. Nothing to sign, one time deal. I signed nothing.A 6 pack case was $399.00. It came with a $50.00 coupon. A 6 pack case special would have 60-74 portions. I ended up getting the steaks for $200.00 plus $14.00 for electronic check cashing fee. Kevin opened the boxes and showed me the top of the steaks. He packed them in my freezer and left. For my money I got 5 N.Y. strips, 6 ribeyes, 8 bacon wrapped filets, 8 filets without bacon, and 18 small terriyaki steaks. The total # of steaks were 45. On Monday the 25th, I grilled a ribeye and a teriyaki steak. They were tough and flavorless. I called Kevin the next day. He said he would make it right. I told him that we would try 2 different steaks to be fair. On Wed. the 27th I grilled a sirloin strip and a filet. When I opened up the filet, the back of the meat was covered in fat. I didn't think filets were supposed to have that much fat. Filets are supposed to me made from tenderloin. These were made from sirloin. I read it on the box. I called Kevin all day on Thurs., the 28th. He did not call me back. I called Atlantic beef and left a message. They did not respond.I finally talked to Kevin that night. He said that he was at a party. He would stop by the next day. He never did. The next evening I called Kevin again and left a message saying that I was contacting the Better Business Bureau. Within minutes I got a call from Travis @ Atlantic Beef. He wanted to replace the meat. I said no. We had tried 4 different kinds of steak and were not happy. He said that on my agreement ( Kevin told me there was no agreement) that I had 3 business days to get a refund. After arguing with him, I told him that I was contacting the BBB. and hung up. He called me back and kept arguing with me and talking over me. I heard someone in the background telling him what to say, I asked if that was his manager & he said it was just an echo. Also I heard laughing in the background b/c he had me on speaker phone. I asked to speak to the person that was coaching him. Bill got on and told me he heard everything and did I want my money back? Either Bill or Travis told me that if I came to Shrewsbury they would give me back my money. They did not want Atlantic Beef to get a bad name. I told them that I babysit my grandchildren and since I was the one wronged they should come to Middleboro. In the end Travis said that he would call me 1rst thing Mon morning Nov. 1rst and refund my money and take the beef back. He never called and never showed up. Even if I don't get my money back, I'll donate the meat to a shelter, I just want people to know my experience with Atlantic Beef. |

My experience was not quite as costly or painful, but every bit as disappointing in the quality of the meat. For $299, I got 2 six-pack cases (probably about 100 portions), and supposedly "because I paid cash, the salesman was able to give me such a good deal." It all had a very "help these cases fall of my truck" feel to it. At any rate, the steaks as they came are tough and flavorless. I'm not even sure that they know a filet is supposed to be tenderloin, not just some cut of meat in the small round shape.
The saving grace is that if you're looking for a meat to marinate for steak tips or a shaved steak sandwich, they're good for that and - for what I paid - reasonably priced. I definitely wouldn't buy them again, however. I'm seriously considering buying a meat grinder to make them into hamburgers. I think Atlantic Beef is in business for the non-descriminating buyer who wants convenience and bulk. If that's not you, stay away. |
