Assurant renters insurance Total Ripoff New York, New York |

Assurant Renters insurance is a complete scam! Our apartment caught fire and my wife and I took all necessary steps to file a claim. We called and spoke to a claims adjuster who demanded we produce all receipts fr the property that was damaged, this after trying to trick my wife into admitting to being responsible for the fire. Fortunately all of the property that was damaged was less than 3 months old so we still had all of our receipts. We had just bought brand new furniture and a brand new computer for Christmas. The adjuster then asked us for all of our our monthly bill expenses (rent, electric, cable, etc.) which totaled roughly 1400.00. He then told us that unless we exceeded that amount that they would not provide money for lodging while our apartment was being repaired which was going to be approximately a month. Even after we told him that we were essentially homeless he still refused to help us. We have two small 7 year olds. Finally my wife convinced him to extend us a 1000.00 advance so that we could rent a hotel. He also instructed us that we should call the RED CROSS for further assistance because he would not be able to help us beyond that unless we spent more than our regular monthly expenses. On top of that he told us that even if we did go above our normal monthly expenses tha Assurant would only pay whatever amount we exceeded 1400.00. In other words if it normally cost us 100.00 per day to stay in our apartment and we rented somewhere to stay for 125.00 per day they would reimburse us 25.00 per day!! After making some more phone calls to inquire about this policy we we told that we only had the "REGULAR" renters policy as opposed to the "PREMIUM" policy. At no time were we ever made aware of the existence of a PREMIUM policy, as we certainly would have opted for the better coverage. We were only offered the regular renters insurance. He also informed us that he (the adjuster) would be out in about a week or so....yes, a week. The local Red Cross has launched an investigation and filed a complaint with the State of Alabama Insurance Board and we have filed one as well. We have also filed a complaint with the BBB. I would advise anyone who is looking for insurance to run away from Assurant as fast and as far as you possibly can and if you already have their policy drop it ASAP because if you never need them (God forbid) you will be up the creek with no paddle and a hole in your boat. |
